About the Author
Dr. Gail Vallance Barrington is a well-known senior evaluation advisor, trainer, and writer. She has more than 25 years of practical experience running her own consulting practice, Barrington Research Group, Inc., and has conducted over 130 program evaluation and applied research studies at the federal, provincial and grassroots levels in health, education, and research. She currently provides advice on program evaluation to a number of Canadian organizations. Her recent book, Consulting Start up & Management: A Guide for Evaluators & Applied Researchers, (SAGE, 2012) is based on her consulting . She currently blogs on consulting topics and provides workshops and webinars on consulting skills and evaluation methods. She is a Credentialed Evaluator and a Certified Management Consultant. In 2008, she won the Canadian Evaluation Society award for her Contribution to Evaluation in Canada. She was recently named to the Dynamic Dozen, the top-rated presenters and trainers at the American Evaluation Association.

Good enough to pass on to a friend

I bought this book a few months ago, when considering taking the plunge from internal evaluator to independent. It was a quick and easy read, but useful to in that it presented some of the practical considerations. I appreciate that the author tackles consulting as a business and not as a lifestyle activity.
I passed my copy on to a friend who is starting out in PR consulting. Though the professions are very different, I thought the book was good enough (and many of the tips practical and transferable enough) to pass on.

Good reference for those thinking about starting a consulting practice.

A fairly comprehensive guide for those thinking about starting a consulting company in that it covers the differences among ownership structures and what skills you'll need to be even moderately successful. Somewhat basic if you're already neck-deep and beyond the first few "startup" months. Still, it has some good advice for managing a business in the early stages. I'll certainly keep it on my business shelf as a reference and periodic refresher.

Excellent resource - well worth it, and a must for those considering a career in evaluation / research consulting

This is an easy-to-read, but not oversimplified guide. It is packed with just the right level of information for someone considering a career in consulting. You don't need a degree in business or law to understand the material, but the book is certainly written for an experienced researcher / evaluator truly ready to set up shop as a consultant. Barrington does an excellent job of covering topics I would not have known to consider. She offers a number of ideas for each aspect of business and consulting work (e.g. setting fees - she offers several models for consideration), never insisting there there is only one "right way" to do it. Also included are excellent resources for further reading.
