Isn't life like a novel in 3 volumes?

The Doctor's Wife is the 4th of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's novels which I have had the good fortune to read. There are 76 more, so, Oxford World's Classics, bring them on! In this, my favorite so far, the heroine reads novels and dreams of her life being like those heroines in her novels. She especially seems to have an affinity with Edith Dombey. Isabel marries a decent, honest, but not much of a dreamer type man. He is very sensible and loves her much, but doesn't satisfy her emotionally, while someone else does. Braddon's wonderful word paintings of the nature scenes, and her many literary allusions were what brought this book to be my favorite of hers so far. And I thought the story was also a little more interesting. I highly recommend this author to anyone who reads 19th century literature for FUN, which is why I do it.

A True Love Story

I was very suprised upon reading this book. I usually read mysteries so I don't know why I picked this out, as it is a love story. I have to admit that to me there were so many areas that were just plain boring. It took me forever to read it. I, on many occiaoaions, wanted to quit reading. It would be days before I would pick it up again but I hoped it would improve. Maybe it was the setting, the era or wild imagination of Isabel. I didn't like not knowing ALL the places she spoke about, being in England, and I have to admit, I didn't know half of the words she said. That is probably because I don't usually read books about the early 1800s or any poetery. And this is how our little doctor's wife, Isabel, wanted to live her life, like in all the books she read. I finally was half into the book when it started to get interesting.
Now, my out-look has changed enormously. No book has ever brought me to tears like this one did. I loved feeling like I was there sitting by a stream or under a giant oak listening to the birds and being inside her heart. It was just fantastic!! I think I will read it again so maybe I will understand it better. There is no doube that this talented writer, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, put a lot of thought into writing this story. Her ideas, preceptions, inventiveness, her creativeness of the Doctor's wife are simply magnificent! I am so glad I read this book, The Doctor's Wife!

Braddon's scathing critique of sentimental, gothic fiction

Contrary to the previous reviewer's assessment, this is no Flaubert's Madame Bovary. From her satirical portrayal of the "sensational" penny-novel writer Mr. Smith to the ridiculous notions of Isabel contrived from her reading of sentimental fiction and poetry, Braddon is following in the footsteps of literary greats such as Austen and Charlotte Lennox.
In fact, this novel is a combination of Austen's Northanger Abbey and Lennox's The Female Quixote. One could make a strong argument that the character of Isabel Gilbert is lifted directly from Lennox's lead character Arabella in The Female Quixote. Both characters have educations that have been sorely neglected by their parents and both live in relative isolation from the rest of the world; drawing their ideas of life and love from the sentimental fiction they immerse themselves in.
The primary difference between the two works is that Lennox adopts a more satirical, humorous approach to her work. Her character (Arabella) finds herself in all sorts of embarrassing and foolish situations and almost ruins her life, but thankfully falls short of it. On the other hand, Braddon's novel takes on a more serious tone. Unfortunately, Isabel Gilbert's foolish notions draw her into marrying a man she does not love. Though, ironically those same notions keep her faithful to him. There is no true happy ending for Isabel, though Braddon wisely does not punitively make it so. After all, Isabel throughout is as innocent and naive in her heart, even when making the worst of decisions. Things are the way they are, as a result of Isabel's decisions.
Braddon does not decry the Romantics of the age (Tennyson, Byron, etc) as terrible authors (though she is unmerciful to the "sensation" novels of her day). Like Austen did with her Romantic contemporaries, she gives credit to their talent while strongly warning against emulating their fiction or adopting their idealogy in real life. Though not quite as good as Northanger Abbey or The Female Quixote, Braddon does a credible job of making her point in The Doctor's Wife.
