Extremely well written, Great concepts on vb.net and the .net framework in general - includes a little MVC and EntityFramework!

I rarely review books on Amazon - even though I have purchased hundreds. I felt this book definitely needed another positive review because it is really a well written book.

Also, the lack of current books on VB.NET makes this book a treasure.

The first language I learned was C# but I quickly moved to Python, and had to do some web languages (PHP) out of necessity of projects but found myself doing some VBA because of different simple apps that our organization has that require customization. At that point I went back and looked at VB.NET and created an MVC web app for fun - piecing the old knowledge I had of C# and my current understanding of MVC in general. I have to admit, I got the web app done but could really have used this book before hand because my true understanding of the way the .net framework and VB.NET works was greatly furthered because of this book.

To build the app I found myself on stack exchange hourly to connect my swiss cheese of knowledge together to get the app to function properly.

After reading this book - and reading it thoroughly, I have a much broader understanding of the way different .net objects work and behave and how to get the best out of my code and utilize much of the work that has been done by Microsoft and the .net framework.

I have to admit that I really enjoy coding in about 5 different languages and my "goto" language has been python for a long time - mostly because we are a data driven organization and python's libraries allow me to quickly write simple code that gets complex problems solved. However, (and with as much flak as VB.NET gets online) I am starting to find myself going towards VB.NET (and I am sure C# since I understand it as well) for things I used to go to python for, because the more I learn the .net framework - the easier it is for me to create a more secure script or app, compile it, and run it to get my job done. I never thought there would be a day when I would be singing microsofts praises, but with Azure and the fact that they are adopting python tools heavily into Visual Studio - I am liking microsoft more and more on a weekly basis.

This book made most of that growth happen for me and has opened my eyes to how good the .net framework and vb.net can be.

This all coming from a MAC/python-django/ror/ person, which is saying a lot for this book and what it represents.

I had pre ordered this book as I already knew as a long time follower of Alessandro that this book would be another must have for a VB.Net developer , I started with buying Core reference guides with "Programming Microsoft Visual Basic 6" from Francesco Balena , at some point Francesco stopped Writing his excellent VB / VB.Net series and I found that Alessandro Del Sole had stepped in this gap. The book is a must have for anyone taking VB.Net serious , beginner , experienced or expert developer all will benefit from this book . Having the book now physically in my hand i can only say that I was right in my decision to pre order it, as I am probably one of the first who has read it and have learned some new insights and thoughts on how I can improve my software even with my on the moment of writing 15 years of .Net experience ( pre beta early adaptor ) I am happy to learn something new every day, and books like this sure help to ease the understanding of some ...

For advanced visual basic programmers.

If you are just learning Visual Basic or a beginning or mid level programmer, this book will be very difficult for you to understand. There are no step by step examples of the concepts and no opportunity to work through examples for hands on learning. If you are already an experienced programmer with a late version of visual basic.net, then there is good material in the book, but to benefit you must already have a strong background in late versions of the language.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever had. My main beef is the examples are very simplistic, and do not even approach the complexity of the actual homework problems. The writing is at times unclear, and the pictures and diagrams are ugly and utilitarian. If you have troubles falling asleep at night, get this book!

About the Author
Dr. Gail Vallance Barrington is a well-known senior evaluation advisor, trainer, and writer. She has more than 25 years of practical experience running her own consulting practice, Barrington Research Group, Inc., and has conducted over 130 program evaluation and applied research studies at the federal, provincial and grassroots levels in health, education, and research. She currently provides advice on program evaluation to a number of Canadian organizations. Her recent book, Consulting Start up & Management: A Guide for Evaluators & Applied Researchers, (SAGE, 2012) is based on her consulting . She currently blogs on consulting topics and provides workshops and webinars on consulting skills and evaluation methods. She is a Credentialed Evaluator and a Certified Management Consultant. In 2008, she won the Canadian Evaluation Society award for her Contribution to Evaluation in Canada. She was recently named to the Dynamic Dozen, the top-rated presenters and trainers at the American Evaluation Association.

Good enough to pass on to a friend

I bought this book a few months ago, when considering taking the plunge from internal evaluator to independent. It was a quick and easy read, but useful to in that it presented some of the practical considerations. I appreciate that the author tackles consulting as a business and not as a lifestyle activity.

I passed my copy on to a friend who is starting out in PR consulting. Though the professions are very different, I thought the book was good enough (and many of the tips practical and transferable enough) to pass on.

Good reference for those thinking about starting a consulting practice.

A fairly comprehensive guide for those thinking about starting a consulting company in that it covers the differences among ownership structures and what skills you'll need to be even moderately successful. Somewhat basic if you're already neck-deep and beyond the first few "startup" months. Still, it has some good advice for managing a business in the early stages. I'll certainly keep it on my business shelf as a reference and periodic refresher.

Excellent resource - well worth it, and a must for those considering a career in evaluation / research consulting

This is an easy-to-read, but not oversimplified guide. It is packed with just the right level of information for someone considering a career in consulting. You don't need a degree in business or law to understand the material, but the book is certainly written for an experienced researcher / evaluator truly ready to set up shop as a consultant. Barrington does an excellent job of covering topics I would not have known to consider. She offers a number of ideas for each aspect of business and consulting work (e.g. setting fees - she offers several models for consideration), never insisting there there is only one "right way" to do it. Also included are excellent resources for further reading.

The Europeans who crossed the Atlantic brought with them conventions about family life that endured long after their migration. Their children inherited beliefs and practices that defined the roles appropriate to each member; a network of communal institutions reinforced the pressures that induced each to play the assigned part. Religion, education, and the law sustained the expectations of what a father, a mother, a husband, a wife, and children should be and do. In 1776 the family of the New World was, in many ways, what it had been in the Old.

Yet the circumstances of life in a wilderness generated subtle forces of change. Though Massachusetts was several generations away from the frontier, it was more remote still from London and had developed in a fashion of its own, so that husbands, wives, and children in that province stood toward one another in a relationship not precisely the same as that in England.

Abigail Adams in her life exemplified what it meant to be a woman, an American, and a revolutionary of the transitional period between colonial status and independence. Her aspirations were not precisely the same as those either of her seventeenth-century ancestors or of nineteenth- and twentieth-century descendants. The role she defined for herself as a woman was that of a wife, but a role entirely the equal of her husband's —not the same but equal. As an American she discovered the uniqueness of her nation's ideas, conventions, and habits of behavior by contrast with those of the women of London and Paris. And as participant in the Revolution she explored the meaning of the ways in which the new woman of the New World would stand beside its new man. Articulate and introspective, she recorded in detail the exciting incidents that crowded her long life. Her records provided the materials for this book.

Professor Akers was fortunate in his choice of a subject; Abigail Adams was fortunate in a biographer whose sensitive account brings her to life.

Adverage Read with Interesting Facts

Akers does a great job of placing the information from Abigail's letters into a story, without directly quoting the letters line by line. A story is presented to the reader through the eyes of the First Lady. It was a required text for an American History class, though I did enjoy reading it. The story itself; however, can be deeply depressing while still communicating the accounts of the famous political family. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about the other side of politics.

I couldn't read it through and through, this is definitely for history nuts. I've never liked reading about people's lives. She was definitely an extraordinary woman, but I just wish the book was written in an excitable tone. The pages just seemed to drag on. I needed this for history class, and was happy after I was done with it. The actually book I got arrived on time, and it was really good quality.

I read this for a history course. It is actually a very nice book. It is nice to see a feminine angle of someone so close to politics in the time of infancy for America. I was gladly surprised by some very nice viewpoints and moral outlooks that Abigail had.l

After reading all three books, I fell in love with story and characters! This series stands out to me because the author uses real life situations and believable relationships between all the characters making the story more relatable to the reader. She gives you the ups and downs that comes with any relationship weather it be with ex's, friends or a new romance. The author does a wonderful job describing the main characters pasts so the reader understands the present romance between the characters. She gives their romance normalcy that you can relate to but with a fairytale twist. It defiantly made me wanting more of Liam but I know all good things have to come to an end. I have and will recommend this series of books to others.

I enjoyed this book. But I can't help but feel like there's more to it. I mean Addison married Liam. But she went and invited his parents to the wedding. Which they showed up for. I don't wanna be wanna those readers that's like you have to write a 4th book. But you could. What ever happened to Kristina and Dave? Lol. I'm looking forward to checking out some more books from Melissa Toppen.

Good ending to a series

Overall I enjoyed the series. They were engaging and the story was well told. You truly get to know Addison and Liam through out the series.

By book three it all seems to be a little dramatic for my liking. Addison is quick to leave Liam over every argument they have. Li never stops her, then begs for forgiveness and she takes him back.

Outside of the dramatics I loved the way everything wrapped up. You'll never hear my complain about a happy ever after.

The cliffhanger in book two is quickly resolved in the beginning of book three and thank goodness for that.
