Although this book is not exactly aimed towards beginners, even the novice of oil painting will turn out beautiful paintings after a few tries (I speak from personal experience). There are many step-by-step instructions along with tons of pictures. I found this book to be very helpful, but I do admit there is nothing quite like actually watching Mr. Ross paint a landscape in his PBS series.

Getting people interested in painting

Well, I have to admit that I'm a professional artist and I bought this book mainly so I could paint corny backgrounds for monsters. That said, I think Bob Ross did a fantastic job of getting people interested in painting; that alone justifies his bright, kitschy pictures. (And the man could paint seriously as well, but you don't see that side of him.) Anyway, if you want to get familiar with oil paint and the rush of mixing colors and putting them on canvas, this is a good place to start. The Bob Ross method will teach you the basics of painting nice little landscapes to hang over the sofa or give to relatives, and then you can go on to doing your own thing once you get the hang of it. The books give clear instructions with lots of photos. Of course, it helps if you've seen the Bob Ross TV shows, but yes, you can learn the basics of painting with this book. Do not be discouraged. Keep practicing, because that's the key to doing good art. Bob Ross was a good man and a good artist, and if you use his books as a foundation for your art education, I'm sure he'll be smiling.

This is a wonderful book. Has a lot of painting's that I enjoy looking at as well as deciding which one to paint. The Bob Ross sight is costly to order from so this was a great alternative not to break the bank. Shipped very quickly in the condition listed.

The book is organized into 3 main parts, comprising of a total of 11 chapters. Part I covers the building blocks of Internet of Things (IoTs) and their characteristics. A taxonomy of IoT systems is proposed comprising of various IoT levels with increasing levels of complexity. Domain specific Internet of Things and their real-world applications are described. A generic design methodology for IoT is proposed. An IoT system management approach using NETCONF-YANG is described. Part II introduces the reader to the programming aspects of Internet of Things with a view towards rapid prototyping of complex IoT applications. We chose Python as the primary programming language for this book, and an introduction to Python is also included within the text to bring readers to a common level of expertise. We describe packages, frameworks and cloud services including the WAMP-AutoBahn, Xively cloud and Amazon Web Services which can be used for developing IoT systems. We chose the Raspberry Pi device for the examples in this book. Reference architectures for different levels of IoT applications are examined in detail. Case studies with complete source code for various IoT domains including home automation, smart environment, smart cities, logistics, retail, smart energy, smart agriculture, industrial control and smart health, are described. Part III introduces the reader to advanced topics on IoT including IoT data analytics and Tools for IoT. Case studies on collecting and analyzing data generated by Internet of Things in the cloud are described.

Arshdeep Bahga is a Research Scientist with Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests include cloud computing and big data analytics. Arshdeep has authored several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of cloud computing and big data.

Vijay Madisetti is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Vijay is a Fellow of the IEEE, and received the 2006 Terman Medal from the American Society of Engineering Education and HP Corporation.

real-world IoT applications developed using a novel design methodology. Cloud-based backend
and analysis are described in detail, as are configuration management systems using NETCONF/YANG.
A solid treatment of a subject that has been subject of much hype and less substance.

Essential reference for IOT projects

Given that so many IOT devices have been prototyped using Arduino, Linux and Pytyon, the examples will be very meaningful to anyone developing sensor networks and applications. Amazing study cram book

This textbook has put me through my two years of respiratory therapy classes. I found it in the library and have been using it ever since to study with. It is to the point and well written. I like it so much that I plan on buying it for clinical year. I am hoping that the author decides to publish a newer edition soon though. This book covers everything you will EVER be tested on. Definetly, good to have!

Keep this book on hand at work

This reference work is as dry as they come; it's also as complete and inclusive as they come. You won't find any illuminating discussions of respiratory techniques or patient management concepts here. The entire book is written in outline form -- definitely "just the facts, ma'am". You won't be tempted to stay up late reading this one for entertainment. So if you are a student, especially if you have not yet begun your clinicals, you don't absolutely need this book --- YET.

But as soon as you DO make your first appearance in a clinical setting (even as a student), make sure you always have the most current edition of this book on hand -- and keep it in your locker, or your colleagues will walk off with it. This exhaustively comprehensive reference will recall for you every little detail of a procedure or concept, all the ones that are right on the tip of your braincell and you can't quite remember them exactly. If you encounter material in the book that is gibberish to you (and you will), you can consult the equally exhaustive bibliography for citations to works that will provide you with more detailed explanations.

Think of this book as the ultimate Google for all things RT.

THE BEST OF RESPIRATORY CARE

This is the best reference book out there. The authors taught me all I ever needed to know in respiratory care and I've been a therapist and respiratory care educator for 25 years. The book is in outline form and will give you information and the facts.... It doesn't read like a novel, but you will have all of the facts you may ever need. Highly recommended. Many respiratory care instructors will hide this text from students because it doesn't give long and detailed explanations on topics. If you are a student looking for a great book you won't sell back, buy this bok. This book will be a one stop shop to study for your exams and the NBRC exams. If you are a therapist looking for one reference book---- this is it!!!!

It covers at a leisurely pace all the important topics that students need to know, and provides excellent examples. I regret his book was not available when I taught such a course myself, a few years ago. ----Ioannis Karatzas, Columbia University

In this wonderful book, John Walsh presents a panoramic view of Probability Theory, starting from basic facts on mean, median and mode, continuing with an excellent account of Markov chains and martingales, and culminating with Brownian motion. Throughout, the author's personal style is apparent; he manages to combine rigor with an emphasis on the key ideas so the reader never loses sight of the forest by being surrounded by too many trees. As noted in the preface, "To teach a course with pleasure, one should learn at the same time." Indeed, almost all instructors will learn something new from the book, (e.g. the potential-theoretic proof of Skorokhod embedding) and at the same time, it is attractive and approachable for students. ----Yuval Peres, Microsoft

Excellent Book

I have taken several courses in probability in engineering and in the math department, and definitely I can assure that this is one of the most beautiful textbooks in probability. It is highly rigorous but written with a pleasant style. Before the reading of this book I really hated the probability, after the reading of this book I love that is related with probability.

A beautiful book on probaility

This book really deserves to be more widely known - just one review so far is absurd for a book of this quality. It is one of the most vivid and engaging book on probability I've seen so far.

I cannot see that it really has much competition. All the books on probability (I've seen) that nurture your intuition have little to no measure theory; conversely most measure theory books assume you already have the intuition. But students of the subject who don't have the best probabilistic intuition AND are comfortable with abstract mathematics at the senior-undergrad-or-beginning-graduate level are not really served by any books on the market (again, as far as I know). For example, Ash, Billingsley, Resnick, Rosenthal et al don't help you with intuition. And on the other side, there are too many books to mention, but they typically don't tell you what a sigma algebra or for that matter a filtration is. Walsh does both - he gives you the intuition and the rigor.

I believe this book will work best for people who have the background described above. My own background is in machine learning, and Walsh's book is extremely well-suited to my needs. But I think it would also work beautifully for students who have done the basic course in probability and want to see more. Or perhaps people whose education in probability has been scattershot and uneven; Walsh will pull it together for you.

It's very clearly written, with an understated "aliveness" that is rare and doesn't distract from the subject.

Good replacement for brown crumbling original

I have an old paperback copy of this book that is brown and crumbling, and I wanted a fresh copy. In my opinion, this is a basic text for anyone interested in the early days of the establishment of Gestalt therapy and psychology. The "voices of the founders" are clear and vibrant in this collection, which contains articles I haven't seen elsewhere. I bought a Kindle edition because it won't turn brown and is unlikely to become extinct as long as a) there are people interested in Gestalt, and b) Amazon is interested in making a buck.

About the Author
Regina Brett has been a newspaper columnist for fourteen years, eight of them for Cleveland's Plain Dealer, where she was a finalist in 2008 and 2009 for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary. She also hosts her own call-in talk show once a week on WKSU, Northeast Ohio's NPR affiliate, and speaks regularly to companies and not-for-profit organizations.

Our troubled times need more books like this

This is collection of life stories and observations by Regina Brett -- cancer survivor, columnist, single mother (not ex-single mother). She provides 50 good pieces of advice backed by actual life events to help make the point for the reader. Current trends in US society could benefit from the lessons in this book. Regina takes a spiritual view of life and self to help the reader have a more centered life.

The spiritual elements come from Christianity and eastern religions -- "zen meets do the right thing to help someone else". The book is strongly geared toward women.

Format:

The format is 50 chapters each about 4 to 5 pages long. The chapters are self-contained mini-fables/stories based on real life events.

Writing:

The writing is eloquent yet very approachable. She has a nice conversational tone; as if you were talking to a close friend.

Content:

You will find at least 75% of the chapters helpful to you at any given time. Each time you are having doubts about something in life; you should take a look at the chapter titles to see what you are missing in life. I really liked "Don't audit life. Show up and make the msot of now" and "Breathe. It calms the mind". Everyone has different challenges on any given day; try to realize this and do the best you can by enjoying life and sharing it with loved ones.

The content is not super deep or innovative but it is accurate. A friendly reminder to not take everything so seriously and just enjoy life is a good thing...especially in these trying times.

Simple is beautiful

This book presents 50 life lessons that the author brings forth through experiences, revelations, and emotions. The writing is open, honest, and heartfelt. As I read through the book, I resonated with several of the stories, was touched by many, and did not (at this time) identify with some of the stories. My approach was reading one or maybe two lessons and setting the book down. My suggestion... read and absorb the experiences, take away what you need, and leave the rest.

The lessons are simple, very easy and digestible reading. I've seen some reviews scoff at the simplicity and complain about the lack of cookbook-like steps on how the readers should fix their life. This author does not presume to know how to fix someone else's life. She relates in a brutally open and honest fashion her experiences, her feelings, and what she took from them. We, you, all of us are so different, and so much the same... we hurt, we react, we need... so much. There isn't a book to fix that (well, for some the bible fills that space). This book, this experience is a sharing of life and, if you walk with this author through hers, perhaps you can take some of her insights and apply them into your life. It is that simple... and that beautiful.

Take away what you need, leave the rest.

Inspiration for the Tough Times, Good Times, and everything in between

Author, newspaper columnist, radio personality Regina Brett has lived an interesting life; one of eleven children, "lost soul who drank too much at 16," unwed mother at 21, single parent for 18 years, college graduate at 30, bride at 40, diagnosed with breast cancer at 41. She's lived several lifetimes in fifty years. As a columnist for the Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper, when she turned 45, she wrote a column on the 45 lessons life taught her. As she turned 50, she added five more. The result is this book, God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life's Little Detours.

Written in a very conversational tone, one that makes you think of the manner in which two very good friends converse, Regina Brett shares the lessons that life has taught her. Some are tender, others funny, some are "common sense," some are due to her faith, and others are due to being a cancer survivor. There are lessons in this book that can be applied to nearly everyone in a lot of situations. Credit issues? Lesson 5. Career issues? Lesson 20. Afraid of public speaking? Lesson 22. Fiftieth birthday staring you in the face? Lesson 36. Having trouble getting motivated? Lesson 46.

Many of the lessons are affirmations of Brett's faith. It seems appropriate, looking back on her life. However, as I am not a reader of her columns, it wasn't what I was expecting. Those chapters were a little heavy handed for my taste. Nonetheless, I can see how some could find peace, solace, and acceptance through some of her methods.

God Never Blinks: 50 Lessons for Life's Little Detours is not a book that I would normally read, I have Amazon Vine to thank for allowing me to experience something outside of my normal reading material. While there were lessons to which I could relate, for the most part I was uncomfortable with Brett's approach to her faith. Understandable, knowing the life she has lived, but not something I enjoyed reading. That said, this would be an excellent book as a Mother's Day gift, for a new graduate, for someone that needs a new lease on life or a better outlook. Brett has taken the time to share her lessons and those individuals could enjoy them and learn from her.

Fails on Every Level

Sadly, this is a rather pathetic offering. It fails on every level. As a BDSM (or spanking fetishist) introduction, it contains only very basic, rudimentary information. All of the information on the BDSM lifestyle contained therein can easily be found on the internet for free. Although it does explain all the basics of the dominant/submissive lifestyle, it assumes that all relationships must be male-dominant. Why is this? Because (according to Leah Kelly) it is ordained by God! lol. Am I kidding? I wish. But does it argue a convincing case for this? No. She cites only one biblical passage, Peter 1 Peter 3:1. If you want to see Leah Kelly argue the position that corporal punishment is ordained by God, check out her book , "Understanding Christian Domestic Discipline" (sadly though, that book fails as well, but that's another story). Lest you think I bear any animosity towards Leah Kelly, I do not. I must admit that I thought her book, "Spanking Romance Stories: Naughty Bloomers Collection" was an entertaining piece of spanking erotica set in the 1800s.

Regardless, I feel morally obligated to address a glaring problem with ALL of Leah Kelly's work. She attempts to enshrine something that should be a personal choice between consenting adults (i.e. spanking fetishism), as a moral obligation commanded by God. I have a huge problem with that. Whenever something becomes an article of faith, reason often fails, becoming defunct before the unregenerate and puerile lies of those who would mislead in the name of God. I am smart enough to see through her tactics. Most people are smart enough to see through her tactics. However, I fear that there may be a small segment of the population that may try to use her books as a justification for abuse, spousal or otherwise. I hope I'm wrong, I hope I'm wrong...

WTF happened to marriage being a partnership?

She writes as if, her husbands word is law. She is apparently responsible for everything that he tells her to be, while he owes her nothing but a distant, fatherly "guidance."

She is a misguided BDSM sub who is trying to reconcile that closet obsession with her naïve beliefs, plain and simple.

Although she is the "author" of this book, she will never understand what a Domestic Discipline" relationship is. A marriage, a relationship, goes two ways...she talks of honoring her partner, by keeping her promises and submissively accepting her punishment when she fails. In a real DD relationship, HE would not be above the law, and would owe her the same promises and submission for the times when HE fails HER.

She's a naïve housewife who likes to be "put in her place" and doesn't understand how that ties in with her love of God, (which it does and can, by the way; she just doesn't get how) ...

"Honor and Obey," Mrs. Kelley. That goes for BOTH of you. Not just the ignorant slave you crave to be.

Oh: and would you take a writing class FFS? I've read better blogs from high school students.

About the Author
Born in Tibet in 1930, His Eminence, Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, a highly revered meditation master, received extensive training in the vast wealth of Buddhist teachings and methods from many great lamas and belongs to the last generation of teachers to have received such training while still living in Tibet. For twenty years, he worked for the spiritual and economic welfare of Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal. In 1979, at the invitation of several students, he came to the West and has since established many centers in both North and South America.

Concise and profound summary of Tibetan Buddhist teachings on death and rebirth

This is a very short and profound summary of traditional teachings and practices regarding living well in this life, dying well and the intermediate states between death and rebirth according to the Nyingma (oldest) lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, by one of the most accomplished Tibetan lamas from the last generation to be fully trained in Tibet before the Chinese invasion.

A previous reviewer dismissed the book as superstition, which is certainly understandable if this is one's first encounter with the extremely exotic and often scary picture of death and the afterlife, the practice of p'howa (transference of consciousness) and the like, which are certainly far removed from the teachings of the historical Buddha and the far simpler approach to death in other Buddhist countries. On the other hand, for those familiar with the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the many other teachings on this topic from within the tradition, Chagdud Rinpoche's book provides a "pith essence" summary, along with invaluable practical tools such as how to write a Dharma will. Set aside the descriptions of the bardo (intermediate state between death and rebirth), peaceful and wrathful deities and the rest if you wish - there are still priceless teachings here on how to live well, practice meditation with utmost profundity and simplicity, and meet whatever comes next with a mind that is ready for anything.
