Thank you Diop!
By Joshua, Master Student
Hands down one of the best books breaking down the different componets of the cultural & ritualistic ties of antiquity. Diop's theory of the polarization of the Southern and Northern hemispheres of the earth along the continent of Asia acting as a "zone of confluence" is a precise outlining for the different practices of social organization as they existed in the past. He goes into the studies of many 17th century socialist such as JJ Bachofen, Lewis H. Morgan, and Friedrich Engels to show the many discrepancies created out of preassumption of the characteristics of people who they never tooken in to study, such as the many societies existing within the interior of Africa.

It seems the main theory that he wishes to debunk is that of an parallel development of social organization existing between the hemispheres. This logically could not have existed due to the many difficulties a people living in two different climates varying from an abundance of resources to the disperation of a scarcity would have practicing the same modes of production and consumption. As an natural habitat causes for an particular adjustment to the environment, two modes of polar disciplines arise, in the southern hemisphere the practice of agriculture develops as the main line of life maintience and wealth, while in the northern hemisphere the practice of horticulture takes a preeminence as the providing occupation. Thus the manifestion
of gender roles as we know them today was heavly dependant upon the different masculine or feminine traits it took to contribute to the necessitated occupations of a sendentary agriculturalist lifestyle or that of a nomadic & pastrolist one.

Diop also goes in depth into the many anamolites that exists within each hemisphere as a result of cultural influence, or an scholarly misrepresentation of a cultural activity.

The Introduction given by Dr.John Henrik Clarke is well worth the read as well, lecturing on the sexist equality that existed within Africa, citing the many cases of history when woman were able to inheirent the throne of central authority a la Queen Hapshesut,or the many miltarity accomlishments of the Candace Queens of Ethiopia. Although Dr.Clarke NEVER dissapoints.

5 star thesis, backed with 5 star evidence. Great read!

I loved it.
By A .J. Casper
This book is deep and complex. One has to read it to grasp and understand. Anyway, Diop essentially divides the world into two cradles - the Northern (patriarchal in character), and Southern (Black and matriarchal). He clearly demonstrates that matriarchy could only be found in Black populations, specifically in Africa, or other places subject to Black influence. European and Asiatic societies have a patriarchal regime because of the demanding nomadic lifestyle in the Eurasian steppes. The sedentary life of Blacks is what fueled great respect for women...the Black woman being the inventor of agriculture. Children often got their names from the mother's lineage. He clearly argues his facts by explaining dowry, fire worship, cremation, amazonism, etc. He gives thorough examples throughout.
This is not just another feel-good book from a zealous Afrocentrist. This is true scholarship! I am sure all readers will be convinced when they finish reading it. Islam, colonization, and Christianity have truely changed the Black world in terms of its matriarchal character. We should respect our women. In European and Asian history, you will never find anything resembling the armed Sudanese Kandake, the Angolan Nzinga, the Egyptian Hatshetsup and Tiye,...the list is endless. Perhaps it's matriarchy that fueled our ancient societies to become world powers in our glory days. We can only imagine. Can Africa ever really gain what it's lost? That's the question. In a way, I feel that Diop asks the same question.

From the Back Cover
Ideal for those new to the subject, this compact introduction to social change explores the "big" issues, but in a way that engages the life experiences of individuals (the "micro-macro" connection). Unlike most books on the subject, it shows the connection between many issues, using current data and a balanced discussion of major perspectives, theories, and models. Begins with an introduction to sociology and the concept of social change; then explores recent changes and trends in contemporary American society; discusses concepts, theories, and models of change with reference to social movements, revolutions, innovation, and the role of change agents as producers of social change; and concludes with a discussion of world-scale trends and change processes in the modern world, with reference to development, globalization, environmental issues, and prospects for the future. For those involved in marketing, policy development, etc.

This is a book for all those who are curious about social change. It is also about how sociologists study change. It is about the substance of social change in the United States and the contemporary world; it is also about the usefulness of sociological ideas for, understanding change and methods of inquiry that have been used to understand social change. We think the topic of social change is of intrinsic interest to everyone, since its pervasive impact is felt by all and is often the cause of considerable perplexity. Sociological perspectives are uniquely suited to illuminate social change because of their holistic treatment of the different aspects of social life that other disciplines (politics, law, economics) address in a more partial way. Sociology is also a lively and contentious discipline, and we have not ignored sociological controversies or omitted complex ideas that defy oversimplification. The book requires some background, but we have tried to write a book for relative newcomers to sociology, avoiding the most arcane jargon and professional idiom for what we hope are clear language and fertile examples. It is about "big" issues, but we have tried to write in a way that engages the life experience of individuals.

The topics of the book are based on what we think is important to communicate about social change based on years of teaching and thinking about it. Others may not agree. It begins with a synoptic overview of recent change in American society. America here refers to the United States, and when we refer to other Western Hemispheric nations, we will use their proper names, or other terms like North America or Latin America. Middle chapters deal with selected change processes and with sociological theories of change. The later chapters are about global change processes in the modern world. A more descriptive overview of the chapter topics and organization of the book occurs at the end of Chapter 1, so we won't elaborate more here.

Writing a book involves the minds and energies of many people besides the authors. Harper would like to acknowledge his indebtedness to five teachers who have been particularly influential in his intellectual development: Ray Cuzzort, Ernest Manheim, Oscar Eggers, Jerry Cloyd, and Jack Siegman. He would also like to thank his students and colleagues at Creighton University who put up with him over the years through several editions, especially the diverse contributions of Tom Mans, Sue Crawford, and James T. Ault. Harper also thanks Barbara Braden, Dean of the Creighton University Graduate College, for her material support during the completion of the fourth edition. He also thanks professional colleagues for their support and critical feedback over the years, including Prentice Hall reviewers Gerry Cox of Black Hills State University; David Swift of the University of Hawaii; Mark Mantyh of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and Becky M. Trigg of the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Leicht first and foremost owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Charles Harper for his capable guidance and friendship over the past twenty years. He also owes a great deal to James T. Ault for taking a Nebraska boy who was a little wet behind the ears and turning him into a productive member of the social science community. When he was offered the opportunity to help with the revision of this text, he jumped at the chance in part because of the experiences he had as an undergraduate at Creighton University. He sincerely hopes that this text inspires others to think critically about the world around them, whether they decide to become sociologists or not.

We owe a special debt of gratitude to the editorial staff of Prentice Hall, particularly Sharon Chambliss, the supportive and congenial "editor in charge" of the project, and Nancy Roberts, Publisher, who has been a constant source of unobtrusive encouragement and the most human face in a distant corporation. A NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS

This is a compact but flexibly organized core text that can be used with a wide variety of supplements. Ideas are connected and developmental, but not so tightly that you can't omit some chapters or rearrange the order to fit the priorities of different courses. Here are a few suggestions for some optional ways of organizing the course.

If you want a more descriptive course about change in America and the world without much theory, you can omit entirely Parts Two and Three about theory, movements, and innovation, though you may have to decode some discussions later on. Another alternative, more consistent with comparative interests, would be to omit the American materials in Part One entirely, begin with the theory material (Parts Two and Three), skip to the material about technology and innovation (Chapter 10), and then continue through material about development, globalization, population/environment issues, and the future (Part Four). Yet another alternative is a more applied emphasis that asks students to observe change processes close up. For that, we would begin with the American materials (Part One), followed with a chapter about movements (Chapter 7), and then with material about innovation and creating change (Chapter 1)—ending with other material as you see fit. You can, of course, rearrange the sequence by having students read the theory and change process material first, but based on our teaching experience we don't recommend it. We placed material about change in America first as a means of engaging students before addressing more conceptually demanding issues about theory, models, social movements, and innovation.

We have retained the review questions at the end of each chapter to help students explore the personal implications of large-scale social change processes and to facilitate discussion.

We would like to hear about your experience with the book and about improving it.

Redemptive Hope: From the Age of Enlightenment to the Age of Obama (Commonalities (FUP)), by Akiba J. Lerner

This is a book about the need for redemptive narratives to ward off despair and the dangers these same narratives create by raising expectations that are seldom fulfilled. The quasi-messianic expectations produced by the election of President Barack Obama in 2008, and their diminution, were stark reminders of an ongoing struggle between ideals and political realities.

Redemptive Hope begins by tracing the tension between theistic thinkers, for whom hope is transcendental, and intellectuals, who have striven to link hopes for redemption to our intersubjective interactions with other human beings.

Lerner argues that a vibrant democracy must draw on the best of both religious thought and secular liberal political philosophy. By bringing Richard Rorty's pragmatism into conversation with early-twentieth-century Jewish thinkers, including Martin Buber and Ernst Bloch, Lerner begins the work of building bridges, while insisting on holding crucial differences in dialectical tension. Only such a dialogue, he argues, can prepare the foundations for modes of redemptive thought fit for the twenty-first century.

Review

"Many scholars within the field of affect studies will appreciate Akiba Lerner's illuminating treatment of Ernst Bloch, who has emerged as a key intellectual progenitor of the field. Jewish studies scholars, in turn, will gain a new appreciation for a figure whose connection to contemporary Jewish thought has often been overlooked."-Nathanial Deutsch, author of The Jewish Dark Continent: Life and Death in the Russian Pale of Settlement

"With nuanced erudition Akiba J. Lerner brings the neo-pragmatist Richard Rorty and the Jewish existentialist Martin Buber into a dialogue to explore narrative strategies to sustain social hope in an age duly skeptical of the utopian promises of political ideologies and wary of messianic enthusiasm."--Paul Mendes-Flohr, The University of Chicago,Professor emeritus, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

"Akiba Lerner is one of the courageous and visionary thinkers who creatively wrestle with philosophic hope grounded in prophetic praxis. He is part of a grand legacy-in family and tradition-that keeps alive a shattering of indifference and a compassion for justice."--Cornel West

How dialectic of real and ideal hope can help us navigate that divide is one of the great themes of the book
By Elliot Neaman
Akiba Lerner's book makes a significant contribution to modern intellectual history and Judaic Studies. Lerner takes the long view, covering the unit history of the concept of hope from antiquity to the present. In doing so, he shows how intellectual historians have neglected to assign the concept its full potential and to recognize the powerful energy it exudes inside the force fields of the Western imagination. For too long, hope has been kept within the corral of Western Marxism, guarded by the messianic-utopian gatekeepers of a future redemption. Lerner shows us that hope has a far richer ancestral line and demands today a more complex assessment in post-modernity. By linking up the thinkers of the early twentieth century Jewish Renaissance with the secular neo-pragmatism of Richard Rorty, Lerner accomplishes a tour-de-force of intellectual bridge building.
Throughout the book Lerner weaves in a recurring theme of how hope almost always raises expectations in a way that opens up new possibilities while harboring dangers of dashed expectations. We recently experienced this collective roller coaster ride when Obama was elected in 2008 and the world had to adjust to the mundane reality that he could not change the world overnight. By calling our time the "Age of Obama" he doesn't mean the flesh and blood man as much as metaphorically, the dilemma we face in post-modernity of possessing almost endless opportunities, both materially and culturally, on the one hand, and yet existential threats to our civilization on the other. How dialectic of real and ideal hope can help us navigate that divide is one of the great themes of the book.
Chapter One sets the stage for expanding the discourse on hope by contrasting the biblical and Hellenistic attitude to hope as a choice between redemption and fate. The former established for later thinkers the possibility of human freedom, while the Greek emphasis on fate allowed contingency and solidarity to structure Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment thought, what Lerner calls, quoting Rorty, "clinging together against the dark." Lerner elaborates in this chapter how theologians, from Augustine to Aquinas connected hope in myriad ways to future salvation, but also how hope was to be incorporated into an imminent Christian world-view. These "vertical" hopes were then transplanted by the "horizontal" hope of the secular Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and ultimately the Enlightenment and post-modern age. Human experience now trumps divine revelation. Hope also becomes a launching pad for a critique of religion and replacing truth, conscience and a rejection of blind authority as a path towards human redemption. Lerner rightly emphasizes Spinoza as the trailblazer who pointed the way towards modern political autonomy and personal liberation. With Spinoza and the later Enlightenment, especially Kant, hope comes down to earth dressed as ethical philosophy based on rational morality (practical reason). The ideal of hope for human happiness and progress becomes, with Kant, the ethical foundation of the modern, ethical, universal state. Lerner then follows the next step in this narrative by showing how the Young Hegelians and Marx turned German Idealism upside down into a materialistic philosophy that radically rejected the illusions of religion and directed redemptive hopes to the social and political here and now. This chapter ends with the last turn, a "secularized eschatology" of Nietzsche, which brings us back to where philosophy began: the paradox that by "overcoming" Christianity, modern philosophy could not shake off the kernel of redemptive hope that had been inherited from the ancient Jews and the Greeks.
In the second chapter, Lerner focuses on the "crisis of reason" brought about by the shocking carnage and irrationality of World War I. In particular Jewish intellectuals in Europe reacted to the retreat of the Enlightenment by recovering the Messianic elements in Judaism that their rationalistic forefathers had rejected. Martin Buber is the prime example of this kind of thinker of the Jewish Renaissance, who created a new kind of philosophical anthropology by combining existentialist and Talmudic and Messianic tropes. Redemption in Buber's philosophy is relocated from the end-time to all the moments through time, which allows to him to get a purchase on inner subjectivity combined with a social philosophy of hope based on solidarity (I - Thou) and vitalism. Lerner then contrasts Buber with Rosenzweig, who argued against the politicization of Messianic hope (for example Zionism) and for integrating redemptive hope into everyday practices and rituals. Likewise Gershom Sholem was suspicious of the Messianic elements in Zionism, and foresaw that Buber's mixing of Messianism and politics could become a dangerous and intoxicating ideology. Lerner then brings Leo Strauss into the mix, who also recognized, but was wary of Buber's political theology on one hand, justifying the good life through a divine source, which existed uneasily, on the other hand, with a more secular kind of political philosophy based on the needs of the living community. Despite these critiques, Buber's Phenomenology of Hope, especially his book I and Thou (1922) had a profound influence on later theology and existentialism. Lerner dissects Buber's ideas with great precision and expertise, showing how he introduced into twentieth century thought an alternative epistemology, based on Biblical (in contrast to Hellenic-rationalistic) inter-subjective experience of "knowing" through individual encounters. Lerner also deftly explains how this kind of "knowing" was different from Heidegger's seemingly similar turn against the rationalist tradition, in that Buber doesn't abandon the individual to the lonely quest for authenticity in solitary being towards one's down death.
Buber grounded hope in intersubjective dialogue and the social reality of community, which leads directly to the third chapter and Ernst Bloch's monumental attempt to establish a School of Hope based on an explicit philosophy of hope. Lerner carefully explores a series of related post-utopian narratives on hope, Erich Fromm, Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, as well as contemporary scholarship by thinkers such as Jeffrey Bloechl, Jürgen Habermas and Gianni Vatimo, who all in one way or another want to recapture elements of religious thinking in a non-regressive manner in a post-metaphysical age.
And so the stage is set for the introduction to Rorty's post-modernist turn to hope as a category for replacing the certainty of past metaphysical and transcendental philosophical systems. In his most utopian moments, Rorty thought that humans could liberate themselves from the religious and metaphysical chains of the past and find emancipation in an ever more liberated, democratic, socially just and enlightened collective, held together by voluntary moments of willed solidarity without any truth narratives. Lerner offers us a very complex picture of how Rorty thought about timeless philosophical questions such as justice, knowledge, love, morality and community in a neo-pragmatic, postmodernist framework. He then gives equal time to Rorty's critics and shows that they found holes and aporias in Rorty's reasoning that were compelling, even to Rorty, who adjusted his views as he worked out his philosophical positions in his later years. In essence, Rorty's attempt to cleanse the public sphere of all remnants of religious transcendence and metaphysics ended up throwing out a lot of babies with the bath water. So Lerner takes us full circle back to where his book started, with exploring "transcendent signifiers" in Western thought. He ends this chapter by positing ecumenical tolerance for religious narratives.
In the conclusion, Lerner tackles the question of how it is possible to build on Rorty's insights on leaving behind epistemological certainty, that knowledge is a "raft" and not a pyramid, but nevertheless elaborates on a holistic account of community based on liberal "true" principles of a just society. Buber's notions of intersubjective encounters provides for Lerner the missing element lacking in Rorty's stark relativism and neo-pragmatism. He calls Buber's account a "phenomenology of intersubjective hope" and makes a compelling case that Buber's form of what we today call communitarianism fills in many of the gaps left wide open by the stark and often lifeless structures of modern liberal society. The danger is that with Buber the public sphere can collapse into personal subjectivity, the secular into the sacred. In response to this problem, Lerner fuses Buber and Rorty together into a new synthesis, calling on various thinkers such as Emil Fackenheim, David Hartman, Steven Schwarzschild, Thomas Nagel and Jeffrey Stout, all working within and trying to expand the "School of Hope" towards a coherent narrative of hopeful human social and political progress minus all the illusions. The book ends with a plea for not abandoning the hard task of "keeping hope alive" against all the odds faced by very fallible human beings.
This book will appeal to European intellectual historians, scholars in Judaic Studies and the history of religion. It will also be of interest to specialists on Buber and Rorty, but generalists as well, interested in the Jewish Renaissance, theology, eschatology, post-modernism and communitarianism. In sum, Lerner's book makes a very valuable contribution, not only to the scholarly literature of a key concept, a series of evolving ideas on hope, but also to the essential human project of finding and keeping our epistemological and moral bearings in an increasingly uncertain world.

Slow Start
By Eric Bokinsky
I was intrigued by the title and concept but took a very long time to read this book.

The story took a very long time to develop, thus I had a hard time getting in to it. By the midpoint, it was fun to watch Lanigan's plan unfold. I guess four years in hiding allows one to think of everything.

The deals did have me thinking it was all too easy, and that's pretty much how things turned out.

Not one of my favorite Grisham novels. Didn't really pick up any emotional attachment to any of the characters and left with little to think about after the last page.

The Partner by John Grisham - entertaining but incredible
By Emelina Quintillan
The Partner by John Grisham is entertaining, but unbelievable. It talks of a law partner who stole 90 million dollars from his law firm & it's client, feigns his death & runs away from a law firm that was about to boot him, from a miserable marriage, & from a bastard child. He ultimately got caught, but he had all the answers or strategies to overcome all the charges against him - theft, murder, divorce, etc. What a genius he is for plotting, planning & gathering all evidence against those who filed cases against him, even before the cases were filed against him. That is how the novel becomes unbelievable. It also had a lousy ending by the disappearance of the woman he loved & losing all the money he stole or made. He escapes all those pursuing him, but in the end he lost the girl who knew where his money was, who he believed loved him & did his bidding. Well, he couldn't have all the luck in the world. His good luck finally ran out. Merece!

Grisham's best work in years
By Pete Benedetti
I liked this one because it wasn't the standard Grisham legal fare in a different wrapper. The last few Grisham books, in my opinion, For those of you, like me, who thinks Grisham's books were getting a little stale with the same basic theme, "Small firm or entry-level big firm lawyer risks life and limb defending the little guy and taking on giant multi-national corporation, etc etc...," this novel might be worth your time.

Our main character in The Partner is, in true Grisham fashion, a young attorney slaving away trying to climb the ladder in his firm when a terrible and fiery car crash claims his life. Where this story varies from the typical Grisham is that the lead character is essentially a criminal himself, albeit one who designs an elaborate plan of stealing from high ranking, corrupt officials by out scheming the schemers - the story, for the most part, is not centered around legal maneuverings as much as it is about a lonely guy whose life lacks meaning trying to change things for the better. A failing marriage, a career he doesn't enjoy, corrupt bosses, financial hurdles. He finds meaning in an unconventional way and the story unfolds with "only in a Grisham" suspense and detail. Throw in a devoted love interest, unforeseen plot twists, and a dazzling ending, and you have the best Grisham effort in several years.
