About the Author
Mike Westbrook was manager of technological research with Ford Motor Company at Dunton, Essex, and has now retired after 33 years in the automotive industry. He has also been Visiting Professor at Southampton University, Chairman of the IEE Computing and Control Division (1983-4), Vice-President of the Institute of Physics (1992-6) and IEE Faraday Lecturer (1987-8). He has been author or co-author of 29 technical papers and a book Automotive Sensors (IOP 1994), as well as lecturing extensively in the UK and USA.

Excellent overview of electric cars

The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject. I recommend it highly.

As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful. A surprisingly large amount are not. Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.

Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.

Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here. In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.

Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.

This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology.

works for me, with caveat

Well written. Slightly outdated for 2011, but a good introduction for me. Not for people without electronics or mechanical knowledge. I don't work in electronics, but I completed a two year electronics tech program. This book speaks to me, but my non-electronics friends wouldn't have a clue what to make of it. The IEE Power & Energy Series is pretty cool in general!

History, romance and magnificent horses…sigh!

I opened this book and from the first page was transported to the New South Wales Hunter Valley in the mid nineteenth century. If you are a lover of horses and have experienced the magic of the Melbourne Cup, this is a world you’ll want to be lost in. This is the story of India Kilhampton - a strong, independent woman who has been given one year to turn the failing family property into a thriving horse stud. Her dream is to breed a Melbourne Cup winner. When she advertises for a horse breeder, and Jim Mawgan presents himself for work, she is faced with the answer to all her dreams and the destruction of everything she knows. The tangled web of intrigue that Mawgan begins to unravel with his presence turns India’s world upside down and sends her heart spinning out of control.

I love that this author’s historical stories are all set in and around where she lives. It brings the books to life. Tea Cooper’s descriptions of the area are so vivid, I find I am no longer a reader holding a book, but I’m walking the property, Helligen, with her, picturing the buildings, smelling the leather and seeing the glossy coats of the horses. Her visceral description of the magnificent thoroughbred, Jefferson, made him linger in my mind long after I closed the book. The author’s secondary characters were powerful and complex, adding humour, mystery and authenticity to the story and balance to the protagonists. And Jim Mawgan was the consummate hero – strong, defiant, loyal but also flawed enough to be believable and, of course, extremely desirable. Loved this book!

Great Read

An intriguing read that had a hornets nest of activity between the Kilhampton/Cobb families set on the Helligen farm. India and Jim carried the story well and the many secondary cast of characters add their dimension to what shaped up to be an enjoyable read, with the evident attraction between India and Jim and the tale surrounding both families. The descriptives of Jefferson were awesome and his part in the story was a highlight :) Jim and India's boundless attraction was oftentimes sweet and portrayed well and formed a perfect picture for this reader. Lots of emotional elements throughout the read that this reader relished. Author Téa Cooper writes such stunning characters in many of her novels and The Horse Thief held its own for a potent read. Strong characters, a stunning backdrop and fabulous story combined for a great read.

A beautiful and interesting story

India wants to bring her family's country home back to its former glory. Helligen Stud used to be so active and vibrant and India misses those days. To make her wish come true she has to show her father she's capable of running the estate and he's given her a deadline. She wants their horses to matter again and to achieve that she plans to win the Melbourne Cup. To be able to do that she needs a capable stable master. When Jim applies for the job it's like a dream come true, India's wishes might be fulfilled. Only Jim is carrying a secret, one that has everything to do with the troubled past of both of their families. When things go horribly wrong will they be able to save the situation and each other?

The Horse Thief is an amazing book about a beautiful home that has a sad history. Even though Jim and India don't know exactly what happened in the past they have to deal with the consequences of the problems between their parents. I loved the theme and the way Tea Cooper handles the secret, giving up a little bit every time. I also really liked the setting, which is amazing. I'm a big fan of books about animals and The Horse Thief doesn't disappoint in that area. The descriptions of the horses are fantastic and I enjoyed reading about their characters.

The romantic part of the story is very good. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to India. Her sister is a spoiled brat and she tries to make India marry an older man in the city so she can have her lifestyle and status back. This leads to a lot of friction, which I found really interesting. The cover of The Horse Thief is as beautiful as the story. I liked it a lot. It was fun to read about the past, to discover how people used to live back then. The connection between India and Jim is great. There are a lot of spectacular moments and I loved the ending. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

have been a fan of simply red and mick sence i first heard moneys too tight to mention,,have followed them through the years, much easier now eith computer, have almost all of their c.d.s and a few tapes.. hate it that mick has left simply red as they were a awsome sound but i will follow him in his new adventures.. i have read all of the books written about mick and red and all are good this one very good.. and i wish mick and red all the best..

If you are a fan of Simply Red this is a must have. I originally bought one for my brother, who is also a fan, but after flipping through the pages I just had to have one for myself. A great read.

WARNING: Abridged! NOT the "classic tale" as promised

The back of this book promises "the classic tale of a peddler, some monkeys and their monkey business."

And I love the classic tale, and so do my kids, for its sweet innocent text, its rhythmic repetitions and the unique character and palette of its illustrations. All of which are preserved here except... as I discovered when I sat down to read this to a group of kids at circle time... the delightful text. Oh, and some of the pictures.

I would definitely not call it the SAME BOOK since the text is different, and I think it's mighty sneaky of the publisher (HarperFestival) to hint that you're getting "the classic tale" when what you're getting is some editorial department's cut-n-slash decisions about what makes the book tick.

What I like about this book is the repetition of the order of the hats, which kids enjoy as well, but one full repeat is missing, and another has been pared down slightly. Some of the text has been skipped - the entire second page - and elsewhere, it's paraphrased for brevity.

Perhaps if you've never read the original, you'll enjoy this book. For me, used to the rhythms and humour of the original, this board book version is woefully lacking.

Luckily, our version is from the library, so all I have to do is give it back - no returns processing necessary. I hope others will learn from my mistake before it ends up costing them the $9/$12 (in Canada), plus shipping, that they'd have to pay to get this book home. And the disappointment of knowing it's not the "classic tale" at all.

Good intro to a classic story for grab-happy kids, but I miss the original full version

I adore this story, and this little board book got my son hooked on it as well - but as others have mentioned, it's abridged and lacks some of the familiar rhythm that makes the original story so great. Once my son stops trying to tear apart paper pages, we will definitely be switching to the original version.

Abridged! No where near as good as the classic!

I purchased this board book for my 2-year-old daughter who had fallen in LOVE with my mother's 1966 paperback edition, in an interest to preserve its delicate pages.

You can imagine my disappointment as I read it to her, discovering that important phrases, entire pages, and key details were left out of this edition, especially the rhythmic phrasing, and some of the low points of the book, completely flattening what had been a dynamic and suspenseful story. Even she noticed the difference and asked for the old book back.

I would love to be able to get a new copy of the original story, however this is not it.

This book thoroughly covers the basics on body butter, including info on different forms of dermatitis, eczema and other skin problems and how body butter can alleviate them. The real value (and the reason why you bought this book) is in its recipes, which are unique and require ingredients that are, for the most part, definitely attainable for the average person. Can you find some of these online? Maybe, but it's worth buying this book to get the added background and detailed explanations.

What a wonderful book! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I consider myself having pretty bad skin and I’ve been trying pretty much everything out there. However, nothing has really made a lasting impression on me (or my skin).

Having said that, I’m so glad I decided to get this book. First of all, it provided me with a completely different approach to the whole business of many of today’s skin products which are pretty toxic. This book did a fantastic job of describing the extensive benefits that nature itself can offer us.

The book is written in a clear and lucid language, which makes it very easy to digest, without sacrificing the quality of the content.

Also, another thing that I really appreciated was the fact that the recipes contained in the book were very easy and quick to prepare. Moreover, the list of resources at the end was a great inclusion, and I will be sure to check them all out.

A spectacular and enlightening book about karma

This is a most extraordinary book by an author whose spiritual journey led her to be a innovative teacher and healer of worldwide influence. In the beginning of the book, while attending a university lecture, Sri'ama Qala Phoenix encounters light beings who welcome her to the world of light. Soon after, Enlightened Masters (such as Sananda, Sanat Kumara, Archangel Michael) appear to her, informing her that she has a mission and will be a teacher for humanity.

The author goes into depth as she describes her surreal journeys to other worlds in her light body. She saw beautiful things, such as crystalline light cities, as she learned from the Masters.

In her personal journey with karma, which details her relationships with herself and family members, the honesty and openness of her heartfelt writing cannot be understated as she describes overcoming her pain through love and understanding.

The book progresses to fascinating aspects of the Divine Plan for Earth and its inhabitants. An example of this is the description of the seven worlds of the Earth, their purpose and the beings that inhabit them (such as devas, fairies, angelic beings).

The reader is invited to help heal personal, family, and collective karma through powerful prayers that are provided. Also, a number of graceful poems augment the subject matter presented in the book. Finally, there is an account of a very special project created by the Enlightened Masters in response to the many prayers for world peace.

Direct messages from the Enlightened Masters, helping a recently deceased loved one continue his journey into the spirit world, aha moments, healing ceremonies involving sacred places and beings from other worlds, it's all here in this jewel of a book! There is an incredible deep well of strength, love and knowledge in the author's soul. It shows in her writing. An inspirational book for the ages.

Astonishing

This is very possibly the most astonishing book I've ever read. It is no less than a 400-page tome on how to clear karma at all levels—personal, familial/ancestral, collective (multiple levels), and planetary. Besides providing detailed information on the divine plan for humanity and the shift we're all going through, it also outlines in detail many of the aspects of our multidimensional consciousness not heretofore described, and explains the disparity we're seeing in levels of consciousness on earth via a shutting down of dimensions of our consciousness due to old individual and collective karma. The prayers and protocols outlined are brilliant; they began opening things up immediately for me, and have given me access to aspects of my consciousness that were previously shut down and inaccessible. The author clearly speaks from extensive esoteric experience, and every word of the book carries a powerful energetic transmission and attunement. I *highly* recommend this book to all with a deep interest in karma and karmic clearing; it is the most useful, informative, and noteworthy source I have found on this subject, bar none.
