yes, bizarre!

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.
Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Lucas B. Hyman, P.E., LEED-AP, is President, Goss Engineering, Inc. A professional mechanical engineer with nearly 30 years' experience, he has planned and designed thermal energy storage (TES) systems, central heating and cooling plants, cogeneration plants, and other mechanical systems. Hyman has participated as a mechanical engineer member in value engineering project reviews, conducted and led forensic engineering studies, and served as an expert witness. He is coauthor of Sustainable On-Site CHP Systems: Design, Construction, and Operations (2009).

An All in One Guide to Thermal Energy Storage

To preface, I've been working in sales for a tank manufacturer for the past year and welded steel chilled water thermal energy storage (TES) tanks are one of the products I focus on. This made me very familiar with much of the content, but new to several chapters as well.

I found this text by Lucas Hyman to be a refreshingly quick read for technical literature. The content is very thorough and exceptionally organized. Almost every chapter can stand on its own (which makes for some redundancy), but allows for quick and easy reference. The chapters progress from the origins of thermal storage and close out with case studies in the final couple of chapters, which really help tie everything together.

If you're new to TES, this book is an excellent way to build some basic knowledge. If you're experienced with TES, this book is a great reference to have on your shelf. I would recommend owning a copy either way.

A Solid Resource for Engineers, Operators, and Managers

In fifteen chapters, Lucas Hyman has gathered and presented a solid resource for Engineers, Operators, and Managers of thermal plants. The subject is treated with a number of solid, real world examples. As a practicing engineer with 22 years experience in constructing, operating, and expanding thermal storage systems, I found several new items of interest and value. In particular, I was interested in the application discussion for turbine inlet cooling and the short history of thermal storage included in chapter one.
Chapter One is an Overview of Thermal Storage, which brings the reader rapidly up to speed on the subject.
Chapter Two discusses applicability of Thermal Storage
Chapter Three covers several Types of Thermal Storage Systems
Chapter Four covers Sensible Thermal Storage Systems
Chapter Five covers Latent Thermal Storage Systems
Chapter Six covers Heating Thermal Storage Systems and was written by a different author.
Chapter Seven discusses Thermal Storage Sizing
Chapter Eight is about Conducting a Thermal Storage Feasibility Study and will be of particular interest to Facility Managers
Chapter Nine discusses Thermal Storage Design Details and will be helpful the Engineer not familiar with the many types available.
Chapter Ten gives a solid set of Thermal Storage Tank Specifications for both steel and concrete construction.
Chapter Eleven discusses Operating and Control strategies for chilled water systems.
Chapter Twelve discusses commissioning the tank to meet the Owner's Performance Requirements (OPR).
Chapter Thirteen discusses sustainability in Thermal Storage Operation
Chapter Fourteen is a thoroughgoing case study of a sensible thermal storage application to a major hospital
Chapter Fifteen is another excellent case study of an ice-based thermal storage plant for an entertainment venue.
As a hobbyist collector of engineering texts, I feel compelled to mention that the quality of the binding, and paper is not up to the standards of older publications by McGraw-Hill. However, it is in line with the quality of more recent publications. The shift to glued bindings happened some years ago and is a pity; it negatively influences the useful lifespan of the book and makes laying the book open on your desk more difficult (especially with larger volumes). It would be a good thing if McGraw-Hill were to return to sewn signatures, rounded corners, and edge dressing as in their older publications. I have some McGraw-Hill publications that are 70 years old that are more well assembled than more recent efforts. Nonetheless, the publishing quality does not detract from the information, it only affects its durability. The book is published using acid free paper.
Overall, the book is a worthy purchase for anyone involved in larger sized cooling and heating systems or that would like to expand their knowledge of the broad world of energy engineering.

Thermal Energy Storage for Dummies, and for Experts

Lucas Hyman's new book, "Sustainable Thermal Storage Systems" is a highly valuable addition to the available literature on commercial Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technology, as applied to HVAC (heating, ventilating & air-conditioning) systems.

The book is well organized, written with clarity suited to either the experienced or novice practitioner in the field, and extremely thorough.

If I may state three (rather minor) criticisms, they are:
1) insufficient references in many of the individual chapters (for readers interested to explore specific areas in more detail),
2) excessive repetition of some concepts and details which appear in two or even three chapters (although this does help to make each chapter stand as an independent document for those not interested to explore the full book), and
3) the seemingly obligatory current need to use the word "sustainable" in the book's title. This politically correct word-du-jour can turn-off some readers as fast as it can attract others. (However, I am more tolerant of its use here than in many other instances, as TES, when properly applied, provides both energy/environmental AND economic benefits, thus in my opinion making TES truly sustainable. This is in contrast to so many currently popular "sustainable" energy technologies which, though they are efficient and relatively environmentally benign, are so far from being economically justified that realistically they must be considered inherently UNsustainable.)

Nevertheless, the book can serve as a helpful reference and guide to those involved in considering, designing, owning, and operating TES systems for HVAC applications.

Very simple, powerful and straight to the point...

It's amazing how such a small book packs such a big punch. At least for those of us still searching for our true purpose in life. The ideas in this book are straight to the core. The author obviously speaks from life experiences and not from fictional ideas just to make a quick buck. I've been searching for sometime for this kind of motivation and ideas on how to become more successful. The whole concept of the book is a wake up call, makes you think and rethink your current strategies. Look forward to doing some more reading, will be following Secret Entourage closely, their content is definitely some of the best I've seen in quite sometime.

I really liked the ideas this book puts out there, it talks directly about people's perspectives on making it and the issues that we all face - mainly with our own ways of finding excuses when we try to achieve something. Reading it at one sitting def made an impact on me, I'm already keen to the ideas in this book, but it still inspired me, specially because it verbalized everything I already know but wasn't necessarily thinking about or doing anything about. Additionally what I learned is to move forward, which we all know how to do but we can always use a push and a shove in the right direction - reading this has made me just a little more focused on what I need to do... it's def. a book that causes self reflection, which can bring about a lot of good things.

I'll begin by saying that I never leave reviews like this unless I feel the need to based on quality of product.

I thought I was fearless. I picked up this book for its punch line of "changing your mindset" because I always believed that success starts with tweaking the way you look at everything. To my surprise this book had taught me much more than was anticipated. The book made me realize that even though I thought I was fearless, I was plagued everyday by fears I had not recognized as fears! I suggest you pick up the book even if only for its ability to allow you to analyze yourself and identify the fears that are holding you back.

military strategy before the War for Independence (first)

I am doing personal research on military strategic thought at the time of the American Revolution / War for America. Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, was one of the most popular & prolithic military strategists at that time. However, since you don't want your enemies to know your moves & countermoves, you should seek to keep those strategies secret. One of Frederick's generals was captured carrying a copy of this limited printing & distribution text (51 copies). The Austrians translated and printed it in 1761 and the English in 1762. So it provides the only insight into Frederick's mindset for that time. His numerous other works were allegedly published posthumously after 1787.
This short book focuses on military thought by generals. It mostly covers operational considerations and battle strategy. It does discuss "projects of campaign" which was the operative term for "strategy" before the 19th century. It has encouraged me to rethink the most common criticisms of military strategy on both sides during the Am. Revolution. So I personally found this seminal work worth reading. And I plan to reread it for further clarification on military thought during the late 18th century.

Good insights into military strategy

For those people who are interested in history and who enjoy reading first-hand accounts, this is fascinating reading.

You can see from the clearly set-out instructions to Frederick's generals as to why he is described as "Great".

I also found it interesting that this edition was first published in 1944 - about the time the US Army was looking at the invasion of occupied Europe. It was obviously printed to give Allied military commanders a background into German military thinking and strategy.

Interesting, but nothing you haven't seen before

While a useful translation of Frederick's Instructions, I'm sad to say that there is really nothing in this book that hasn't already been published many times over in other works about him and his army. Since it has instructions for his Generals from a particular time and relating to a specific campaign or plan, it is also not exactly helpful for someone trying to get an insight into 18th century warfare. I much more strongly recommend Frederick The Great On The Art Of War by Jay Luvaas.
