Sociologically Mindfulness

I purchased this book for an introductory Sociology class and this book helped me a lot with the class. This book is very well written with the intent of making sociology easier to understand. Michael Schwalbe avoids the idea of sounding too scientific noting that if readers are looking for terms and definitions regarding the subject of Sociology then The Sociologically Examined Life: Pieces of the Conversation is not the book for that. The book is broken down in different chapters and within the chapters are Sub-headings that go in depth with different examples Schwalbe uses to demonstrate sociological mindfulness. Each chapter contains, great examples, valid but debatable points and will make anyone rethink the social world.

A great introduction to sociology!

This is a wonderful book for introducing undergraduate students to the philosophy of Sociology. Schwalbe's concept of "mindfulness" really grabs you. The concept is deceptively simple but extremely rich in its power to inspire the sociological imagination in students - and professors. Mindfulness ---- what a great idea!

My favorite book.

This was a book that was required for my Sociology class and I hate assigned readings, so I always put off reading this book. However, as I went on reading, I found that I was reading ahead. I absolutely love this book.

Every person, including children, should read this book. It is an eye-opener.

Please note: I'm a science-fiction reader, not a boring blah-blah reader. This is honestly a great book.

Yet on the law pervading the cosmos can be considered a true law, and thus the cosmos is the only real city. A city is also a dwelling-place--in the case of the cosmos, the dwelling-place of all human beings. Further, a city demarcates who belongs together as fellow-citizens. The thought that we should view all other human beings as belonging to us constitutes the core of Stoic cosmopolitanism. All human beings are citizens of the cosmic city in the sense of living in the world. But the demanding task of acquiring wisdom allows a person to become a citizen in the strict sense: someone who lives according to the law, as the gods do. The sage is the only citizen, relative, friend and free person; via these notions, the Stoics explore the political dimensions of the Stoic idea of wisdom. Vogt argues against two widespread interpretations of the common law--that it consists of rules, and that lawful action is what right reason prescribes. While she rejects the rules-interpretation, she argues that the prescriptive reason-interpretation correctly captures key ideas of the Stoics' theory, but misses the substantive side of their conception of the law. The sage fully understands what is valuable for human beings, and this makes her actions lawful. The Stoics emphasize the revisionary nature of their theory; whatever course of action perfect deliberation commands, even if it be cutting off one's limb and eating it, we should act on its command, and not be held back by conventional judgments.

Crushing long entrenched assumptions

We like to simplify, boil down, find the single reason for something. Miroslav Hroch shows us that is not the way of the world, at least not of Europe. In particular, nationalism was not the powder keg that blew Europe into numerous countries. Nationalism could be either a contributor or a result of statehood, with large effect or none at all. Hroch is an anti-reductionist. He delves into every conceivable aspect of nation building, from the invention of historical myths to national holidays and monuments, and demonstrates the effects with examples from numerous countries and communities at his fingertips. Some became independent states; many did not.

European Nations is part three of an inadvertent trilogy: one volume every 15 years. The first part came out in 1985; the second in 2000. This one is a tightly focused view from 50,000 feet up. The main point he returns to repeatedly is that any one factor is less impactful than we think. So, language is an obvious unifier and divider, but less than we assume. Modernization, the growth of government services and the consequent need for better educated workers, also contributes less than we assume. He even questions (with evidence) the prerequisite of literacy for nation building. Histories and myths were pulled together to unify the populace. The Church was the main means of transmission. But it was different in every case, as were the results.

There was a big change between proudly marching for your country and for your ruler. The idea of being country proud is not ancient; it is very recent. Your homeland tended to be your community within the realm, not the whole kingdom. As politics and social movements evolved, defenders of local homelands were reinvented as national heroic strugglers and nation builders. Failure was no barrier to national hero status. This sort of insight changes our perspective on probably most of the countries of Europe. Even Marx was too simplistic in his analysis by Hroch’s standards. Class struggle might have been a factor of greater or lesser import in some countries, but hardly all.

There is an entire chapter on definitions used by Hroch and his counterparts, whom he credits freely and criticizes as needed. The nuances of nationalism, national identity, national movement, nation, state-nation and nation-state give you idea of how granular this field has become.

There was nothing predestined or predictable about the outcome: whether an ethnic group became a country, if monarchies could merge into a country, how big or small a country would be. They were making it up as they went along. It was a bubbling cauldron of activity, and predicting where the next bubble would pop was foolish. Even hindsight is not obvious; it needs the reading of this book.

Once you get by the cover, which features USAAF P-40s; this is a good reference work for Navy aircraft lost during WWII. Aircraft are listed by type with a short (typically one line or less) listing where the aircraft was lost, including date and unit, if known. Campbell has other volumes out that present basically the same information listed by units. Do not get this book if you're looking for something to sit and read- it's strictly reference material for BuNo geeks.

John Reilly is the bestselling author of" Bad Medicine: A Judge's Struggle for Justice in a First Nations Community - Revised & Updated" (RMB 2016) and "Bad Judgment: The Myths of First Nations Equality and Judicial Independence in Canada - Revised & Updated" (RMB 2016). After 33 years in public service, Reilly retired, having become disillusioned with the Canadian criminal justice system and in particular its treatment of aboriginal people. Still publicly active and openly critical about the law, politics and the legal system, he now seeks to challenge people to rethink the true meaning of justice, the need for drastic changes in the criminal justice system in Canada, and the need to change our attitudes towards aboriginal people. John is currently at work on his third book, "Bad Law", which will be published by RMB. He lives in Canmore, Alberta.

A bit disappointing, but reasonable fare.

I had hoped for a bit more from this one. Hopefully the next installment will be a more interesting. I probably was hoping for more considering the protagonists. Still, I don't regret buying, and I'll likely try another if it becomes available.

An Absorbing Story and Must Read!

“This is my friend Ryan. He made pecan pie. I hope that’s okay with everyone?”

“I’m allergic to nuts,” Blake muttered. Or evidently said loudly enough for everyone to hear. Ryan snorted, Bianca glared, Matt looked like a confused puppy, and his mom gave him a questioning look and said, “Pecan is your favorite.”

“It’s a recent allergy,” Blake said weakly.

Ryan walked past him to set the pie on the counter and whispered, “Don’t worry. My nuts are hypoallergenic.”

Being a twin is special, and when Blake’s twin Bianca meets Matt and falls madly in love with him, it’s imperative that Blake approves. The thing is, Matt isn’t so bad. His friend, Ryan, on the other hand, is a completely different story.

Granted, they get off on the wrong foot – meaning that Ryan is pretty much foot in mouth. He can’t help himself, the stupid comments just keep pouring out.

Sometimes, though, foes make the best lovers, and Blake and Ryan teeter on the line of hate, to tolerance, to tolerating sleeping together because sex is about the only time they don’t drive each other mad. They decide to keep their arrangement a secret, and as with all secrets, things get mucked up when a secret becomes common knowledge.

Making Nice is a lot more than enemies becoming lovers, it extends to a relationship building between two people who are both equally flawed and live up close and personal with their worst enemies – themselves.

“I’m just saying, I guess—make sure you’re paying attention. Blake has a tendency, if he doesn’t think he can get what he wants, to take what he can get.”

Ryan forced a smile, though it felt like he’d just been insulted. “Which one am I, then? What he wants or what he can get?”

I was a bit nervous at first. This is a fairly long book and it’s a new author for me, but I loved the idea for the plot and went in with an open mind. Elizah Davis did not disappoint.

I’ve said before that one of the things I love is good banter between characters. I understand that it’s not something that should happen in every story, that’d get boring, but I just love it when an author can make characters duel with words and pull the reader into it. This was the case for Blake and Ryan. They truly had a banter that lasted even after their relationship progressed, and it made their relationship that much sweeter for me.

To a certain extent, the blurb really doesn’t do the story justice. It’s so much more than this hate-sex type of deal. The reason the story is the length it is, at least in my opinion, is because you get to see their relationship build. It’s not an automatic hate one day, love the next – they kind of fall into it. It’s a progression that you can visibly watch throughout the chapters.

I also enjoyed the side characters. There were a decent number of them, but I never got mixed up on who was who or who had been told what. They had personality and life that added to the story for me. I do wish we’d gotten to hear more about Ryan’s family life, as most of it deals with Blake’s, but that was just something that would’ve been a nice addition.

I will say that the thing some people may struggle with here are communication issues – Ryan and Blake certainly have them. The reason it didn’t bother me in this story is because I saw it as a natural byproduct of their relationship and its roots, and also a growing pain that they needed to overcome. The author doesn’t make this a moot point though, and at one point outwardly acknowledges that communication is probably more beneficial for them. To me, their communication issues made sense, it worked.

Also, I really adore the cover art by Paul Richmond. It fits the story quite well, right down to the check list (with friends crossed out, which totally made me smile after reading the story).

So many romances happen instantly these days. Within a week or a month, a couple is already to the I-do stage. I prefer books that make the relationship take time and grow. And this book definitely fits the bill.

Blake has some worries. His twin sister who is his best friend has fallen in love. And this just might be ‘the guy’. As she turns more and more toward Matt and shares less with him, his whole world shifts. Though not nessarily for the better. At poker night over at Matt’s house, he comes face to face with Ryan, who insults him at every turn.

Ryan doesn’t understand why every time he opens his mouth around Blake, something demeaning or rude pops out. He doesn’t do that! And yet, with Blake, he does. Every single time. One drunken night turns into the hottest sex either of them have had and next thing they know it, they set up booty calls, trying desperately to keep the information from Matt, Ryan’s best friend, almost brother, and Bianca, Blake’s twin. As Matt lives across the road from Ryan, the chances of keeping it quiet are nill, but they blunder on.

Until everyone finds out.

I loved this story. From Ryan’s unerring foot-in-mouth disease to Blake’s snarky comebacks to Ryan’s opinionated cat. The fact both of these men had no idea how to do a relationship and wanted it, but were afraid to say so, was very endearing, because I so know the feeling.

To me, the only part of the book I really didn’t like was Bianca. She came across as very self-involved and full of herself most of the time.

But that didn’t stop me from giving this 5 stars. I will definitely be rereading it and looking for more from this author.

Love and hate are both strong emotions. They are two authors often combine to make some pretty powerful stories. This is the exact scenario we find in Making Nice by Elizah J. Davis. Two men who couldn’t be more different or antagonistic to each other finding a common ground in lust and eventually finding more.

Some people love this dynamic. Some people hate it. For me, it is completely based on whether the author can make me believe the pairing. Davis is able to do just that.

We see two love stories in Making Nice. First, is the existing familial and twin bond between the main character Blake and his twin sister Bianca (no this is NOT twincest. They are best friends). We also watch the relationship between Blake and his future brother-in-law’s best friend, Ryan (and therein lies the enemies-to-lovers aspect).

This isn’t a sweet, everything’s perfect, let’s ride off into the sunset type story. Blake and Ryan mess up… repeatedly. They are guys who can’t communicate to save their lives. They are guys who don’t want to put themselves “out there” for potential hurt. They are guys who would rather be pissed than talk. However, I didn’t feel like I was reading about adolescents. I sort of felt like I was reading about how I handle conflict sometimes.

On the Blake and Biana front, we get to watch the evolution of family and friendship. We get to see their relationship strain and ultimately grow stronger.

I enjoyed the time I spent in Blake and Ryan’s world and would be happy to read more from this author.
