Jack London

London is my inspiration. From working for ten cents an hour at menial jobs, to the Crimean War, to becoming one of the greatest American authors, this book details his life. He literally learned his craft to keep from starving to death. The book is geared more toward young adults. It's a quick read and can be used to inspire the young to peruse his other works. L.W.

Great Book about a Sometimes Great Man

Jack London, the author of many stories such as "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," was a very interesting man. This book tells the story of his life, from his rough childhood up to his death as a rich and famous man. I didn't always like Jack London as he was portrayed in this book--he spent some of his life as a drifter, stealing rides on trains and begging for money on the streets. He was also not a very good father to his two daughters. I have to admit, though, that his life was terribly interesting. He traveled a great deal, all around the world both when he was young and as he grew older. It was fascinating to see where he got the ideas for his stories--most of them were based on experiences he actually had. Jack London was admirable in that he always knew he wanted to be a writer, and he dind't let anything stand in his way. He achieved his goal through hard work and dedication, despite all obstacles he had to overcome.

I liked that this book was a wealth of information, containing a lot of details about London's thoughts and feelings at certain times in his life, gathered from journals, letters and from people who knew him. I felt like the book gave a well-rounded description of his life.

This book was a great book and I would suggest that anyone out there who likes Jack London books read this biography of him! Jack is a great person to write this on, he is a courageous hard worker and a family man, but his own family keeps moving while Jack is out on business trips. The author did a fantastic job on making details so you could actually picture exactly what it was he was tlaking about! This book is also very unique, but probably because it was the first biography I have ever read, but it was a great one. The author used a lot of strange words that I did not understand, but that is why he put a glossary in the back of the book. That was very useful. The author used several metaphors and similes, and acted a little sarcastic at times. I really, really enjoyed how this book was published and how the author decided to write it! I think everybody should read this biography, especially if you are a fan of Jack London's work!

La predizione Impossibile

Il titolo descrive bene questo effetto che nella sua semplicità rimane comunque incredibilmente incomprensibile.

Si utilizza un mazzo di carte normale che viene fatto mescolare a piacere dallo spettatore.

Poi lo spettatore viene invitato ad aprire il mazzo a ventaglio davanti agli occhi del mentalista il quale farà una previsione che scriverà su un bigliettino che poi capovolgerà sul tavolo in modo che nessuno possa vedere la previsione.

Lo spettatore viene poi invitato a servire le carte sul tavolo una ad una, ad un numero a piacere.

Il mentalista chiede allo spettatore di dire un numero tra 1 e 5 e di distribuire le carte in un numero di mazzetti uguale al numero detto.

A questo punto il mentalista chiede allo spettatore di passare la propria mano sui mazzetti e di cercare di percepire qualcosa, uno ad uno i mazzetti vengono così eliminati e ne rimarrà uno.

La prima carta di questo mazzetto verrà girata, si rivelerà la carta scritta sulla previsione all’inizio dell’effetto.



Pensa a un numero!

Vediamo un altro praticissimo effetto realizzabile con un normale mazzo di carte e che ben si presta performance di tipo mentalistico.

Great visual introduction to key philosophical problems

Depending on who’s behind them, non-fiction comics can be fascinating and educational, or didactic and boring. Thankfully, The Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy falls firmly into the first category. I attribute that to the crediting of Kevin Cannon as both artist and co-writer. It’s clear that a visual presentation of the material has been kept in mind throughout. The other co-writer, Michael F. Patton, brings the subject matter, since he’s a philosophy professor.

As demonstrated by the cover, the metaphor throughout the book is a journey down the river of philosophy. That allows for various imaginative, entertaining images (as well as the occasional talking fish, commenting archly). Although the text primarily drives the book, there are plenty of strong visuals to enhance, emphasize, and expand on the words.

Our narrator is Heraclitus, one of the pre-Socratic philosophers, given a friendly face and active demeanor by Cannon. He explains early on that philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, and to investigate that, we’re going to find out what other philosophers thought through history. He’s a great choice for the imagery, since he’s the one that first said, “It is not possible to step twice into the same river.”

In addition to the historical framework, the book is arranged around a collection of the most famous problems tackled by the field over the years:

An Exuberant Canoe Ride Down the River of Western Thought

Why is an introduction to philosophy important? Simply enough it is an introduction to thinking logically about what you as an individual actually believe when it comes to topics such as God, free will, ethics and even your own mind. Michael Patton and Kevin Cannon's Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy covers each of these topics, including a chapter on logic itself, by dipping the adventurous reader's toes into the works of some of Western Civilization's premier thinkers. All of this is achieved through a light-hearted canoe ride down the river of knowledge with Heraclitus doing double duty as guide and paddler. Along the way he gives the reader the broad-strokes of Western thought by enlisting the help of lively animated renditions of personalities such as Kant, Plato, Hume, Spinoza, Locke - even Nietzsche can be found skulking about like a goth kid. In no way a chronological account of the discipline, Patton does one better by showcasing the back-and-forth conversational nature between the texts and ideas that continually shaped art, governments, laws, sciences and mathematics over the past give-or-take 3000 years. I imagine this book would make for a fun, accessible text for the many virgin thinkers bumbling their way into their first freshman philosophy course. And as Heraclitus points out in the introduction to the book, philosophers depend heavily on metaphors and hypothetical scenarios to explain their reasoning, so bringing the field of study to a visual medium feels axiomatic. Even though much of the subject matter was familiar to me, the crisp artwork and humorous dialogues between the philosophers made for an entertaining and intellectually meaty read. Very well done.

Informative Book, Lively, Masterfully Rendered

This was a highly informative and humorous book. Aside from capsulizing the major figures in philosophy, the book has continuity as a story. I found the lighting of scenes excellent as well, masterfully rendered. I've been a fan of Kevin Cannon's work for over a decade now and it's great to see his continued progress as an illustrator.

The Substitute Groom by Joan Johnston
Silhouette Special Release ~ August 1998

Colt, Huck and Jenny had been a trio since they were thirteen. Colt had always loved Jenny but because his best friend Huck had confided he too loved Jenny, Colt kept his feelings to himself. When Huck dies in an Air Force accident, Colt feels guilty for wanting Jenny for himself. Convincing Jenny that he's the right groom is another matter, especially when she's keeping a pretty huge secret herself. This was a wonderful feel good read with some heart wrenching moments. From earlier books we're learnt how much Colt loves Jenny, it was lovely to see him have his HEA.

Another great book by Joan Johnston! I just loved Colt to pieces! I was so glad to read about Jenny and Colt. Thank heavens, after all those years, she ended up with the right guy! You ached for Colt and his feelings for Jenny. It was hard to put this book down. The various characters in the book reach out and grab you too. Easy to see that books can follow about Jenny's brother, Randy with Faith and Colt's big brother Jack and Hope! At least we HOPE so. The Whitelaw's are such an exceptional family, by reading the books, you can be a part of the family, at least for awhile. And, Joan usually brings in some imperfection which is unusual, but more normal than the drop-dead gorgeous heroine! This is a reality check that many readers can relate to. Thanks Joan for entertaining us so well with another great read!

The Substitute Groom

Colt Whitelaw, Huck, and Jenny were an inseparable trio growing up. Colt and Huck both began to develop feelings for Jenny, but Huck asked her out first and Colt valued the friendship between them all too much to fight for her. When Huck is killed in an Air Force training accident and Colt survives, he moves back home and proposes to take Huck's place as Jenny's husband to be.

This was a short, fairly uneventful story that didn't really hold my interest. Recommended if you enjoy this series or if you want the build up to Sisters Found.

This is the third, final, and definitive edition of this book: I will not be expanding it further, so it's a safe book to buy. Previous editions have been available in less expensive black and white versions, but this time I decided color really does make a difference, so there is no black and white option. The cover was painted especially for this book by Mark Staff Brandl.About 10 chapters are expanded from chapter 4 in my book Why Art Cannot be Taught: A Handbook for Art Students, but this book is not just an extract from that one. I have worked hard on this book: everything's been reorganized, and lots has been rewritten; lots of material is crowd sourced from Facebook; and this edition also adds five new chapters that weren't in the second edition--2, 5, 7, 10, and 43. It's as good as I can make it. I hope you find it useful.
