Perfektion! A great Book 2 in the series...

A soon as I finished reading Perfekt Order, I was hooked and couldn't wait until Perfekt Control came out... and I am so happy to say that book 2 of the series does NOT disappoint!

This book picks up right after Perfekt Order, but now we are switched from Mia's mortal POV to see through Brynn's eyes, as a Valkyrie on assignment in Midgard (Earth). At first, I was sad about this (as I LOVE my girl, Mia!), but Brynn's wonderfully effervescent mind and ways can't help but win you over! :) Reading from Brynn's POV really helped me understand the Norse characters better (e.g., how they think, see the world, duty & honor above all-- even their hearts!), and.... come on... Henrik and Brynn are the cutest! This relationship is much different than Mia/Tyr's relationship, with Brynn & Mia growing up together and having, literally, been friends for AGES (haha!), and it is a powerful example of patience, preferring others and true love (friendship and romantic). We get to know more about both Brynn and Henrik's pasts, and the choices they have both made for honor. And, there are enough good Mia/Tyr bits that made your "Perfekt Order" self happy (happy sigh!). We also get to know more about Elsa and Forse juuuuuuust enough to tease us for the 3rd book!
Bonus: there is a "Henrik's hotcakes" recipe (Swedish pancakes, like crepes) that is DE-licious!

So, in summary: GREAT book (no "book 2 let-down!"), AWESOME characters and relationships, plus YUMMY recipe. What are you still waiting for? Get Perfekt Order if you haven't yet, get hooked, and then you can read this one. Thank me later... :)

Brynn for the Win!

Perfekt Control is the story of Brynn and Henrik. Apart, Brynn is one of the best Valkyries the goddess Freya has in her arsenal, and Henrik is one of the most deadly assassin’s at Tyr, the god of war’s command. Together they are the most technology savvy and mathematically advanced duo of modern times. They are also the first and second bodyguards for Tyr, god of war.
The problem is that they cannot act on the feelings that may, or may not, be brewing between them until Brynn is promoted to Captain in the Valkyrie ranks. This would be a lot easier to accomplish had they not been sent together to retrieve the goddess of love, Freya, after she is kidnapped. Can they rescue her before all of the realms lose their love for one another?

I have nothing but love for the amazing S.t. Bende. All of her stories are imaginative, creative, fun, and bonus... They all come with awesome recipes. S.t. Has a masterful way of telling a story. She makes you want to understand all of the background and history of the Norse god’s that she holds so dear. When I first read the Elsker saga my husband thought I had enrolled in a new class at the local college because of all of the random Google searches he saw on my laptop.
Bende has a way of blending modern reality with the mythology in a seamless way that makes you nod to yourself and think, “Ummm of course the god’s would be developing and changing with the times... Who wouldn’t love our technology?” This is while making you question whether or not Henrik might have actually invented the cell phone that you are using right now. Hmm....:)
Bende’s writing is clean and concise. Her story is original, and just puts a smile on your face. She is truly a master of her craft.
The only issue that I had with this book in it’s entirety, was the fact that to me it was very predictable. I like to be surprised with how a story will end, so figuring it out took a little of the excitement of it away. With that being said. I still LOVED this book, and am eagerly looking forward to the next installation.

All in all, I give this book a glowing 4 out of 5!

Brynn is amazing!

This second book in the series follows Mia's best friend and epic Valkyrie warrior Brynn, who along with her mega crush Hendrik is protector of the Norse God of War! Until the beautiful love Goddess Freya goes missing she must band together and go on a mission with her crush for her whole life Hendrik Andersson!.

I love the character of Brynn she is such a badass warrior and could kick anyone's butt however she has such a sensitive side with a lot of things going on making her really relateable. She has so much going on with her past that she just hasn't dealt with it and watching her grow through this book and getting into her head was great and refreshing.

Its interesting to read from a characters POV that is in this Asgardian world and not looking in from the outside so the mythology is just great especially as we see a lot more realms in this one! This is definately not like any other book that I have read and is so different to Bende's other books. I love the plot and the way the story goes you never know whats going to happen or where they are going, I mean they really do go to Hel and back... literally. The writing style is just so easy that you fly through it as the story is so inviting and exciting as there is a bit more of a step up in the action department in this book. The other thing I love about Bende's books is the fact that the female characters are so strong and can stand on there own, they don't need a male character to save the day, this is especially true with Brynn but Hendrik is still lovely!.

I love the character of Hendrik and was so happy to find out that these 2 were getting there own book, he is just so smart, a badass warrior and also has a sweet side you really appreciate him as a character especially his relationship with Brynn. She has always thought of them as friend zone and it doesn't help that being a Valkyrie means she needs to wait till she is a captain with her honor intact before being able to meet her soul mate. But they have the best banter and its like at times there brain is the same as they bounce epic scientific ideas off each other.

Its great to see them grow together but also to see Brynn's relationship with other characters such as Mia and especially Tyr. Who has known Brynn her whole life like Hendrik but knows her feelings for him and understands what she is going through but gets it so he can be a shoulder for her to lean on.

Once again an awesome book, its great to not only continue on from the first book but to also see it take a new action pack turn. The next book is definitely on my must have list!

The Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao Zedong altered Chinese history in the 1960s and '70s, forcibly sending hundreds of thousands of Chinese intellectuals to peasant villages for "re-education." This moving, often wrenching short novel by a writer who was himself re-educated in the '70s tells how two young men weather years of banishment, emphasizing the power of literature to free the mind. Sijie's unnamed 17-year-old protagonist and his best friend, Luo, are bourgeois doctors' sons, and so condemned to serve four years in a remote mountain village, carrying pails of excrement daily up a hill. Only their ingenuity helps them to survive. The two friends are good at storytelling, and the village headman commands them to put on "oral cinema shows" for the villagers, reciting the plots and dialogue of movies. When another city boy leaves the mountains, the friends steal a suitcase full of forbidden books he has been hiding, knowing he will be afraid to call the authorities. Enchanted by the prose of a host of European writers, they dare to tell the story of The Count of Monte Cristo to the village tailor and to read Balzac to his shy and beautiful young daughter. Luo, who adores the Little Seamstress, dreams of transforming her from a simple country girl into a sophisticated lover with his foreign tales. He succeeds beyond his expectations, but the result is not what he might have hoped for, and leads to an unexpected, droll and poignant conclusion. The warmth and humor of Sijie's prose and the clarity of Rilke's translation distinguish this slim first novel, a wonderfully human tale. Adult/High School-This beautifully presented novella tracks the lives of two teens, childhood friends who have been sent to a small Chinese village for "re-education" during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Sons of doctors and dentists, their days are now spent muscling buckets of excrement up the mountainside and mining coal. But the boys-Luo and the unnamed narrator-receive a bit of a reprieve when the villagers discover their talents as storytellers; they are sent on monthly treks to town, tasked with watching a movie and relating it in detail on their return. It is here that they encounter the little seamstress of the title, whom Luo falls for instantly. When, through a series of comic and clever tricks and favors, the boys acquire a suitcase full of forbidden Western literature, Luo decides to "re-educate" the ignorant girl whom he hopes will become his intellectual match. That a bit of Balzac can have an aphrodisiac effect is a happy bonus. Ultimately, the book is a simple, lovely telling of a classic boy-meets-girl scenario with a folktale's smart, surprising bite at the finish. The story movingly captures Maoism's attempts to imprison one's mind and heart (with the threat of the same for one's body), the shock of the sudden cultural shift for "bourgeois" Chinese, and the sheer delight that books can offer a downtrodden spirit. Though these moments are fewer after the love story is introduced, teens will enjoy them at least as much as the comic and romantic strands.

This deceptively small novel has the power to bring down governments. In Mao's China, the Cultural Revolution rages, and two friends caught in the flames find themselves shuttled off to the remote countryside for reeducation. The stolid narrator occasionally comforts himself by playing the violin, and both he and more outgoing friend Luo find that they have a talent for entertaining others with their re-creations of films they have seen. A little light comes their way when they meet the stunning daughter of the tailor in the town nearby, with whom Luo launches an affair. But the real coup is discovering a cache of forbidden Western literature including, of course, Balzac that forces open their world like a thousand flowers blooming. The literature proves their undoing, however, finally losing them the one thing that has sustained them. Dai Sijie, who was himself reeducated in early 1970s China before fleeing to France, wonderfully communicates the awesome power of literature of which his novel is proof. Highly recommended. Unintended Consequences

Unintended consequences. It's what frequently happens when you try something for the first time. You know, like Dr. Frankenstein's experiment with creating life. Christopher Columbus looking for a new route to India. Alexander Graham Bell calling for Watson. Banning Books. Thalidomide. Nuclear Power. Slavery. Smoking. Deforestation. The Automobile. Almost anything you can think of comes along with unintended consequences. Some good. Some not so good. Some, terrible.

In this novel, the author demonstrates the law of unintended consequences by telling the story of two privileged young men in China during the Cultural Revolution. They are being "reeducated" in a poor village far from their homes. There, they meet a beautiful seamstress who has not been exposed to books, western music or the ways of the world. The boys set out to reeducate her, and, in so doing, woo her. One plays Mozart for her on his violin and skillfully acts out scenes from popular movies. The other reads to her from a forbidden cache of western books by Cervantes, Hugo, Tolstoy, Dumas, Flaubert, Bronte, Balzac and other luminaries.

Because the story is related in simple language, often with slapstick humor, what should be an oppressive nightmare reads like a fairytale complete with a Cinderella, two Prince Charmings and more than one wicked villain. In the end, irony prevails over passion, demagoguery, and the best intentions of the various "reeducators".

I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something

I am not a fan of this book, but I read it for a book group. Everyone else thought it was touching, suspenseful and deep. I was the lone dissenter. They read much more into the characters than I did. I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something.

Unputdownable !

Read it in one sitting within 24 hours of buying. Author has a remarkable flair for storytelling just like other recent English writers of Chinese origin Ha Jin (In the pond, Waiting) and Adeline Yen Mah (Falling Leaves, Chinese Cinderalla). Having myself grown up during adolescence in a remote part of India on a staple diet of western classics including Russian authors like Tolstoy and Chekov, I could empathise with the characters savouring Balzac in translation notwithstanding the cultural disconnect. I also felt guilty that unlike the characters of this book, two boys denounced during Mao's cultural revolution, just for having the wrong parents; I was privileged to be growing up in a free, albeit third world country with access to a decent public library in my own cozy home town. As the Econimist has rightly said in the blurb, this book is "A paean to the magic of literature" and "A true book lover's book" (pun intended). The little Seamstress had the last word in this 21st Century French novel written by a Chinese author, ..she had learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman's beauty is a treasure beyond price !! This tells us that Dumas,Mozart,Balzac or Beethoven transcend man made national boundaries while pollinating intellectuual curiosity of adolescents of the global village.

Extraordinary!

This is the most extraordinary book on the most extraordinary feature of human life: Romantic Love. Its encyclopeadic scope and content are beyond redaction. Finally, an analytic philosopher undertakes the most underanalyzed emotion of love and expounds on it from every possible vantage. Most of the myths, fantasies, and illusions are swept away, and in their stead is a heady analysis of what love actually is, how it is manifested, and why it may be desired.

The book is fifteen years old, so why am I the first reader to review it on Amazon? If this book is as extraordinary as I claim, why aren't there thousands of previous reviews? I've been stumped by this question for weeks, and I think I have an answer.

Solomon's work is truly encyclopeadic. Perspectives from philosophy, psychology, behavioralism, theology, sociology, literature, history, anthropology, and nearly every conceivable discipline are included. I found this fact to be its strength, but it could also be a liability. If one is not acquainted with major concepts from each of these disciplines, not to mention their seminal writers and works, many of Solomon's observations may appear obscure and opaque. Singular cases of insight might be reduced to "huh," and just passed over.

Perhaps another problem may be involved. Many of us may not want to know what "love really is," and when stripped of all its illusions, myths, and fantasies, maybe what is "really" left does not fit one's idealizations. Instead of clarity and substance, many may prefer their own distortions, hopes, and dreams. Perhaps "love," especially romantic love, is so over-romanticized that peeling away the nonsense leaves one bereft.

Ironically, these two possible objections are the book's biggest strengths. Romantic love is one of many emotions, even several emotions rolled into one, that is simultaneously a cause for joy and a source of friction. Fundamentally, it is a visceral response to an over-intellectualized feeling. As often as it is comforting, it can be a source of angst; as often as we extol it, we frequently berate our "beloveds." So, what gives? How and why can romantic love tie us in knots, and then have us repudiate its very influence? Obviously, many of us have not come to terms with romantic love, and for someone to present it in such clear, stark, and "unromantic" a manner may undermine our confidence in, and our anger over, romantic love.

For me, all these "conflicting" attitudes are necessarily entailed. Maybe, all these seeming contrarieties are at the core of what we mean when we say we're "in love." Romantic love is a constant "tug of war," and for me, that is its singular strength. That's how we "grow" in love. Romantic love is what makes "the other" a part of one's self, and the self often rebels at becoming or identifying with "the other." Perpetual tension is what give romantic love its vitality, its transformative qualities, even its reidentification of ourselves. But facing that reality is sometimes difficult. Perhaps Solomon reaches too close to its truth.

For those strong enough to endure the tension, and those whose knowledge is more encyclopeadic, this book will add insight and clarity to one of the most challenging of human emotions. And the next time you say, "I love you," you might actually "know" what you mean. Not that we ever do, but at least we'll feel closer to what we think we mean.
