An excellent and comprehensive history of the fiddle

The two upper voices of the string family have an eternal appeal for us because they are the two instruments most akin to the human voice. The violin produces a soprano-like singing tone that has an almost uncanny ability to emulate the voice in projecting emotion. The viola has more of a tenor or baritone sound but it still can reproduce the human voice with a rich, dark legato that is almost operatic in its emotional power. The Violin and Viola: History, Structure, Techniques is a superb history of the violin and viola for performers and students of music history. It is comprehensive, covering the contributions of Stradivarius and the renowned Cremona school of violin makers. It discusses the crucial Baroque/pre-Classical era of composers and teachers such as Geminiani and Tartini, who helped to standardize the instrument. Leopold Mozart, whose violin textbook was the most famous of the early Classical era is discussed in depth. Famous violinist/composers like Corelli and Paganini, both of whom helped to strengthen the violin in its development as the orchestra changed, becoming larger and more formidable an adversary for the solo violin in the concerto, are an important component here as well. Author Sheila Nelson is a violinist and teacher whose knowledge of these two string instruments is deep and profound and she has written a superb introduction. Bruce Derman, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in private practice as a psychotherapist for over 40 years in Woodland Hills and Santa Monica, California. He specializes in high conflict couples, sexual and eating disorders, and divorce mediation and coaching. He has written two other books entitled "We'd Have a Great Relationship, If It Weren't For You" and "We Could've Had a Great Date, If It Weren't For You". Dr. Derman works with many people in his private practice who are struggling with the issue of emptiness in their everyday lives as a result of exposure to different losses. He helps them to move through this dilemma so that they can learn to accept their emptiness as a natural part of their life's journey. A Well Structured Lesson On Life

This book is a modern day fable written by a psychologist to teach the reader the importance of being one with yourself and not needing the acceptance of others to lead the life you enjoy. Dirk and Dawn are a couple that seem to lead the perfect life. They both have high paying jobs, they entertain friends regularly, wear the best clothes and have an expensively furnished house. As the fable goes along we wonder if their lives are so "perfect." When a mysterious hole appears in their living room floor, their whole world seems to come apart.

One can wonder why a hole could cause so much turmoil but as the two obsess over the hole and try fruitlessly to fix it, they get more dismayed emotionally and incredibly stressed. All attempts to fix the hole from hiring contractors to just covering it up are futile and in fact, the hole continues to grow.

One day a strange little man appears who seems to know their issue and claims to be able to solve their problems. Dirk and Dawn are desperate and let the little man do his thing. However, to get to the solution will definately take them out of their comfort zone and make them realize that all they thought about the world was shallow and not really correct.

This is a very quick and fun read and I greatly enjoyed it. Thank you Mr. Derman for sending me a copy of your wonderful book!

The Hole will be different for everyone

This three star rating is just my opinion and others may find much more value in this book than I did. I had trouble "getting it" the lesson never came home for me. I enjoyed reading the fable of super couple Dirk and Dawn and I understood the lesson about them clinging to material things and the identification with their egos. The "hole" in their house that was "emptiness" I never fully understood. I wish the author would have had the "little old man" that was the couple's guide explain it more. I found myself identifying with the confusion of the characters in not understanding the lessons. I am not new to these concepts, I most closely associate my spiritual beliefs with Buddhism and understand the power of detachment and knowing you are not your ego. I related better to Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now teachings than this book.

The lessons of this book are:

"Stop opposing the obvious and choosing sides. Learn to accept the unacceptable along with the acceptable. To do otherwise is to declare war on the darkness in favor of the lightness."

"Loneliness is not painful. The rejection of loneliness is painful...your pain is mostly an illusion."

"Whatever you resist persists."

"But in a world that offers true peace and contentment ,surrender is the only key that will unlock the door."

I got more understanding of the books concepts out of the reviews for this book than the book itself. For me the book was to much of an allegory and should have had more direct language explaining the concepts. The books teaching seems to be to completely surrender to emptiness so you can achieve fullness. If this concept interests you and you connect with it this book may be for you.

Entering the Unknown and Embracing It

If Dr. Bruce Derman offers therapy as well as he writes then he must be booked for months ahead! This book, THE HOLE, is a clever fable and as Derman obviously knows, people relate to fables well. The story has been excerpted many times on this review site and this reviewer will not repeat the fable as written. But the story behind the fable as presented by Derman, as well written and wise though it is, is not the same experience as reading for yourself. The concept of deciding to embrace the unknown rather than continue running from it in fear is in many ways the basis for therapy. Derman develops this concept by using a 'perfect couple' encountering a threatening other and eventually, together, accepting and actually jumping into that unknown mysterious and terrifying other and finding a better relationship and life because of their commitment shines a light on the path each of us must encounter if we are to grow.

In Dr. Derman's introduction, succinct and to the point and brief though it is, offers some of the warmest supportive and therapeutic advice yet published. If everyone would just simply add this book to their library and offer it as gifts to those about whom we have concern as they face emptiness then this chaotic world would begin to make sense, allowing us all to move on - enlightened. Highly recommended reading! Grady Harp, December 10

Unfortunately until now many women have been unknowingly increasing their risk of pelvic floor injury with inappropriate general exercises. Recent clinical research now tells us that some commonly performed exercises such as intense core or abdominal sit-up exercises, and particular gym exercises increase the downward pressure on the female pelvic floor. This downward pressure can strain and weaken pelvic floor support structures increasing the risk of female pelvic floor problems including vaginal prolapse, incontinence and pelvic pain. Inside Out provides those women with or at increased risk of pelvic floor injury guidelines on how to perform safe and appropriate general strength and fitness exercises. Inside Out also guides women step-by-step through pelvic floor and core strength and control exercises to assist them to improve their pelvic floor support. Inside Out is divided into two main sections. The first section is based upon the most current clinical research into pelvic floor exercise. This section details Kegel exercises (pelvic floor exercises) and teaches women how to find, feel and train their pelvic floor muscles for improved pelvic floor strength and control. Women are guided through appropriate core exercise technique and taught the common pelvic floor and core exercise mistakes to avoid. The second section of Inside Out teaches women how to identify unsafe exercises including inappropriate core, gym, aerobic and fitness class exercises. Although the book is targeted at the mature female reader, there is a great deal of information that would also be useful for the younger woman. The how to's and how not to's are clearly explained, with logical, easy to follow advice and SAFE exercises. I was absolutely amazed at the information I read in this book. Things I had NO idea about that now make perfect sense. There is plenty of practical and sensible information in "Inside Out" that we ladies should know. Why is this not widely known? There are many issues that are so common, but usually hushed up as personal and embarrassing problems, and we only hear about them from others or health professionals when it becomes a problem for us. Secret women's business is of no benefit if no one shares the secret to begin with. So many things can be done to improve and prevent things such as pelvic floor prolapse and incontinence issues that the vast majority of use aren't even aware of in our daily activity. I have modified the way I do many things and have noticed significant changes for the better. I am my own proof that this information is correct and effective. I am a big fan of what I have read and spread the information at every opportunity. I now look around the Gym and see damage being caused to pelvic floors on a regular basis. Women over 50 doing leg presses and sit ups etc, following barked instructions from practically pre pubescent personal trainers who have probably had no instruction or training on how to protect the pelvic floor, particularly in the menopausal or older client. It wouldn't suprise me if they hadn't even heard of a Pelvic Floor. These poor ladies will probably be wondering why their "female problems" are getting worse when they are doing their very best to improve their health and fitness. We need a more educated society in regards to women's health, pelvic floor strength and care and continence control. Clearly the fitness industry needs a major overhaul, but until then, we need to educate ourselves and empower ourselves to make positive changes to our lifestyles and exercise plans to protect the long term health and wellbeing of our bodies. I for one do not accept the only solution to my problems is surgery or a Tena pad. Come on! Give me a break! Prevention is the key firstly, then after that take some control back for yourself by improving your knowledge on what you can to help yourself. READ THIS BOOK!! This book is The Bible for your Pelvic Floor with the latest up to date research and data and I applaud the fact that someone has taken the time and effort to get this needed information out there. About the Author
Michelle Kenway is a Brisbane-based physiotherapist. Her role as consulting physiotherapist at The Mater Hospital Redlands and her long-term experience as a private practitioner in women's health and as a women's health exercise instructor have provided her with a unique understanding of the pelvic floor health and fitness challenges facing women. Michelle has devised and delivers evidence-based exercise programs to help women with pelvic floor dysfunction, osteoporosis, spinal problems, during pregnancy and after childbirth. Michelle is a well-known Australian presenter in the field of women s health and exercise. In 2011 she was invited to present at Filex, Australia s largest fitness convention. Michelle is also an invited member of the Continence Foundation of Australia s expert panel working on the Pelvic Floor First initiative. Her goal is to enable all women to enjoy and experience the health benefits of exercise through safe, effective exercise.

Disappointing

This book looks large on the computer screen and for the price you would expect almost a college textbook of information; however, it is a VERY small paperback with sparingly useful advice padded with a whole lot of repetition. There are few pictures of specific do-and-don't exercises (I would have preferred a lot more) and the details about what you should and should not do are sometimes a little vague as well as being written for an Australian audience (obviously) - So you might have to look up exactly what is meant by "bush walking", for example. I am giving the book a 3-4, however, simply because of the effort made toward disseminating this information to women. For so long we've really been in the dark about pelvic floor issues and a lot of us have felt isolated in our physical problems due to the lack of awareness that many physicians still have on the topic. This book is definitely a step in the right direction - However, I'm thinking they now want to sell me the DVD and other "associated" material. . .

Big price tag for a small book

I have seen Michelle Kenways' videos showing pelvic floor exercises and she is an expert in her field. I thought the book "inside out" would be a large book packed with info due to the high price I paid for it- I was wrong! The book is a very small paperback (88 pages) to be precise and is not worth the extortionate price it's being sold for. Repetitive info throughout and diagrams to pad it out. I have not read anything I did not already know. Personally I would recommend watching Michelle Kenway's videos for free on You Tube and don't waste your money buying the book.

My gynecologist read this and said it was a good book.This gave me reassurance that the instructions were valid. I showed it to my personal trainer and he will modify my program to conform to the ideas.

Good but dated

Overall this is a very good book. This moderately experienced home shop machinist definitely learned from it. I have only read volume 1. The only gripe I have is that despite the copyright date the text and especially the photos are very dated. More 50's and 60's than the 1981 copyright date. That's OK for the most part, but there is no discussion any modern machinery, I think DROs got about two paragraphs. This book is definitely more detailed than Machine Shop Trade Secrets or Machine Shop Essentials and a good addition if you already have these. If you're OK with not having a book on the latest machinery and technology this is a good reference.

A Must Have

This book is a "must have". It is a great memory jogging tool.

It serves as a "30 years out of trade school" refresher. I particularly like the speeds and feeds section. I highly recommend this book to hobbist and machinst alike. There's something for everyone!
