Great new series

I enjoyed the characters in this new series. Seems the writing was tighter than her other series. Good story, good character development, unexpected twist. Looking forward to reading more about these people. Love the setting of this series. I'm reading in 30 degree weather but feeling warm as I read about the sun and beach!

Even though I received this book for free for an honest review, I could not finish it. Too dark. Too much violence. Sorry, just not my kind of mystery. Actually, in five chapters I didn't get to a mystery.

A Fine Couples Book

I liked that this story deals with the kind of secrets we desperately hold close. Most of us are so concerned with hiding our secrets that we don't realize everyone - everyone - has secrets. Everyone has their kink. But we're so closely guarded with inhibitions that we never allow a crack in the armor of secrecy that could enrich our lives. What kind of kinks do our best friends have? They have them, but we're too afraid to ask.

In this book, the discovery of secrets is handled not only realistically, but proceeded with all due probability. Drake also handles the the touchy issue of different personalities not always agreeing on everything. Too many books have characters who just all seem to agree on everything. But reality is far different: people have different fantasies; people have different ideas on what is too far; people have insecurities that inhibit enjoyment. Drake touches on all this and brings the story together for a satisfying end, even if the title hints at the outcome.

The comments on politics had me laughing, and the hints about church had me nodding. Here's hoping the readers will take a little bit of inspiration from this story and maybe realize that their secrets aren't really all that bad. After all, in a hundred years, who is going to care about your secret?

Any husband who has fantasized about his wife having sex with another, this story will totally capture you. The HotWives Club is well written with very everyday like characters that any fun-loving couple can relate to since Drake makes them so realistic. This is the kind of story you want to read slowly and you don't want it to end. The story brings together characters found in other stories from this erotic author. How these characters become involved in each others sexual lives is something that could happen to most any couple. By the time you turn to the last page of the story you are so involved with the characters you want to know what will happen to them next.

Author of more than a dozen books of poetry and two of literary criticism, Susan Howe's recent collection of poems That This, published by New Directions won the Bollingen Prize in 2011. Her earlier critical study, My Emily Dickinson, was re-issued in 2007 with an introduction by Eliot Weinberger. Three CDs in collaboration with the musician/composer David Grubbs, Thiefth, Souls of the Labadie Tract, and Frolic Architecture were released on the Blue Chopsticks label (2005; 2011). Howe held the Samuel P. Capen Chair in Poetry and the Humanities at the State University New York at Buffalo until her retirement in 2007. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999 and served as a Chancellor to the Academy of American Poets between 2000-2006. In fall, 2009 she was awarded a Fellowship to the American Academy at Berlin. Grenfell Press published a fine press edition of “Frolic Architecture with photographic prints by James Welling in 2009. Recently she was an Artist In Residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. In October, 2013 her word collages were exhibited at the Yale Union in Portland, Oregon, and in the Whitney Biennial Spring, 2014. A limited press edition of Tom Tit Tot (the word collages which amount to a series poem) with art work by R.H. Quaytman has just been published by MoMA in New York, and Spontaneous Particulars:The Telepathy of Archives, (2014) published by Christine Burgin and New Directions.

Another Solid Book in a Very Good Series

This really should be 4.5 stars.....
This is the Fifth in the series.... I have been reading them in the correct chronological order. With this series, that is the only way. There are too many events and people to start in the middle. Too many references to events in the past.
This is a good story. The alien hordes have a new leader. He has also come through the tunnel of light. His home world appears to be around 100 years ahead of earth of 1865. He talks about nuclear weapons and jets. It will be interesting to see how this character develops the hordes.
At one point, the author indicates that the total population of the humans on the planet outnumber the hordes by 10 to 1. That is an interesting fact.
Two new civilizations are introduced. The Zulus and the Chin. The Chin are currently enslaved by the Bantag horde.
This book is mostly about the life of imprisonment that a "pet" of the horde must endure. Towards the end, the slaves revolt and few escape. The last third of the book is devoted to the escape of this small band. Several minor clashes and one large one. A great description of a locomotive chase, similar to the one that occurred during the Civil War with Andrew's Raiders.

From a New Angle.

OK, so, I knew Sgt. Major Hans Schuder wasn't dead when I wrote the review for "Fateful Lightning." But I didn't know it when I read the book so, hoping that you will read these books in chronological order, I think my review kept the spirit of the novel by not revealing everything. This one is absolutely different. "Battle Hymn" is a vision of the Gulag on an alien world. Whereas "Fateful Lightning" gave us the terrible sacrifice of the Cartha, "Battle Hymn" shows us the enslavement of the Chinese, and others, with whom Schuder is now living. Major new character is Ha'ark, the Redeemer and, very important as well, a Zulu warrior friend of Hans. There will be a bit of confusion with come names. As in ther past, with Vuka's brother, in this book a companion of Ha'ark is named Jamul, but in the future will be referred to as Jurak. I do not know the reason for this. It may be an oversight, or it may be that these new commers have chosen to make their names more palatable to the natives. Still, all books have errors. The soul of this series is its conflict, big as a planet and enduring as the machines that transported the Yankees to a New World of War. Most of the book concentrates on the efforts by Hans and his confederates in escaping, the help they get from the Republic, the problems that the traitor Hinsen creates, and the menace that Ha'ark, with his modern, futuristic vision of warfare, means for the survival of humans on Valdenia.
